Aquarian tritons: general information
On condition of appropriate care these Amphibia are capable to live in bondage (in an aquarium) to 30 years. These animals are direct relatives of other amphibians – salamanders and are under protection. For this reason their contents is strictly limited. Another matter – ordinary subspecies of these tritons (thorny, edge, ordinary, Alpine). Their contents is regulated by nothing, as allows to get so unusual pets.
Aquarian tritons: description of types
It is possible to support about 10 species of tritons in house conditions, however three of them are the most widespread. The first is an ordinary triton. Usually he grows in length up to 9-12 cm. Its olive-brown back and a yellowish paunch give him air of mystery. Also these tritons are covered with the whole scattering of yellow specks. The ordinary triton has longitudinal lines on the head. At a male on a back (from the head and to a tail) the comb grows.
The following species of aquarian tritons – edge. This amphibian is much larger than the previous relative. It grows in length up to 18 cm. Edge tritons are painted in black or brown colors. A paunch at them orange, on it numerous specks are located. As follows from the name of a look, these beings also possess crests, only they at them are slightly shorter, than at ordinary tritons. Edge tritons as protection against enemies use the toxic agent emitted by skin glands. Therefore their contents demands extra care. And, at last, the third species of aquarian tritons is a thorny triton. This being is considered the largest of domestic amphibians. In length it grows to 30 cm. This triton received the name thanks to the tips of edges which are sticking out on each side his paunch. At rest they are hidden, but once the thorny triton begins to worry, they get out of hand, forming needles. These Amphibia are painted in dark green color and have a pale yellow paunch. All their body is covered with black rashes.
Maintenance and care for aquarian tritons
Not the opinion is absolutely right that keeping of tritons in bondage – business troublesome and expensive. Correctly to support these amphibians in house conditions, it is necessary to have an elementary set of knowledge. First, it is worth to remember that amphibious are cold blooded animals: temperature of their body completely depends on surrounding. Therefore optimum aquarian temperature for them – from 15 to 20 wasps. No additional sources of heat (UF-lamps, glow lamps) are necessary here. Secondly, tritons are amphibious animals, i.e. they can live both in water, and on the land. Therefore you should not forget about equipment of an aquarium by artificial "island" (stones, canopies, balsas). Of course, there are also completely water activities of tritons, but they are not popular among amateur aquarians. Thirdly, aquarian tritons can live as groups, and alone. For them it not essentially. Certainly, the more tritons are planned to get, the bigger capacity it is necessary to get an aquarium. Not less than 12 l of water have to fall on one triton. As soil it is necessary to use sand or gravel. In an aquarium it is possible to place both live, and artificial plants. Usually tritons do not touch them. Only during reproduction they wrap in them the caviar. Aquarian scenery should not be too expressional that the amphibian was not wounded about them. It is important to know that aquarian tritons eat exclusively live forage: earthworms, small fish, shrimps, larvae, flies, snails. These creations also will not refuse small pieces of meat, kidneys or a liver. Skilled aquarians advise to give to tritons once a month vitamins. Young individuals need to be fed every day, and adults – every other day. It is necessary to know that from time to time aquarian tritons fade. Usually before it they rub the head about stones. As soon as their skin is torn, they pull together it and immediately eat. These amphibians are quite sluggish creations. They can be for hours in hover, clinging to walls of an aquarium or to plants. Tritons reach puberty by 3rd years. At this time the animal lays caviar, carefully protecting it. Whitebaits appear in a month.
