The winter forces most of forest inhabitants to change a habitual way of life. Someone falls into long hibernation in the cozy minks and dens, and someone is forced to spend much time in search of edibles. Among the last – red squirrels which can be seen often on winter fluffy fir-trees.

1. To prepare for winter of protein, as well as the majority of animals, begins even in the early fall. First of all, it creates to itself a cozy nest on branches of trees or in hollows. She puts it in the form of a sphere from thin branches of the small size. Sideways in a nest the round entrance which at the first signs of danger or bad weather shuts up a moss or leaves becomes.
2. The bottom and walls of a nest are warmed by means of a dry moss and a lime bast thanks to which even during the most fierce cold weather of a squirrel in a nest feel perfectly. And when these fluffy zverka lodge near people, they can train in the nest also cotton wool or, for example, the tow found on boondocks of houses.
3. Besides construction of a nest, the squirrel also stocks up with a small amount of edibles for the winter. She hides acorns, mushrooms or nutlets under roots of stubs and trees, near the habitat. When food with the onset of cold weather becomes a little, it with ease finds the hided supplies even under a thick snow layer by means of the keen sense of smell. 4. With the onset of cold weather the squirrels try to get out of the cozy nest only for satisfying of feeling of hunger. When supplies come to an end, these zverka regale on cones and when they are not enough – fir-tree buds and even bark of trees. Full squirrels most often just sleep in the nest, having stopped up an entrance to it that nobody disturbed them.
5. Their fur coat which by winter not only changes color for grayish helps to endure cold weather to proteins, but also becomes more fluffy. And in ears these rodents have amusing brushes. Besides, these small animals feel any change of weather in advance therefore during a strong blizzard or snowfall it is almost impossible to see them jumping from a branch on a branch – they rest in the lodge for a long time.
6. In February at squirrels the first marriage period begins - at this time fluffy rodents become especially active. And a month later they have a posterity for which females care only.
