In the nature there are various breeds of hamsters, and some of them are especially popular among fans of pets. Not to be mistaken with the choice of a little fluffy small animal, it is necessary to understand in what after all one breed differs from another as different conditions of keeping and domestication are characteristic of each look at first.

1. Attentively consider a hamster. If length of a trunk and tail: - 4-5 cm, and a tail are practically absent – the most tiny look – Roborovsky's hamster; - 7.5-9 cm, a tail of 1.5-2 cm – the Chinese hamster; - 7.5-10 cm, a tail of 4-10 mm – the Dzungarian hamster, Campbell's hamster; - 13-14 cm, a tail of 1.5 cm - the Syrian or golden hamster; - 18-25 cm, a tail of 7-10 cm - a krysovidny hamster; - more than 25 cm and a tail not less than 3.5 cm - a hamster ordinary.
2. Define a color of a hamster: - light gray or gray color with white specks and a dark strip on a back of black or dark gray color – the Dzungarian hamster; - golden-yellow or reddish-brown with a white paunch – the Syrian or golden hamster; - an upper body of a red color, lower - mainly black, on breasts and on each side the heads three white spots – an ordinary hamster; - gray-brown, a paunch lighter – a krysovidny hamster; - dark-brown, a stomach of cream color, ears gray, on a back a dark strip – the Chinese hamster; - a pad and a paunch white, a back – pink-pale-yellow, ears black with a white fringe, over eyes small white specks – Roborovsky's hamster; - brown-golden with a dark strip on a back – Campbell's hamster.
3. Mark out the distinctive features characteristic only of a certain breed of hamsters: - the Syrian or golden hamster has soft, dense and velvety wool and, depending on its length, is three types: short-haired, long-haired (Angora) and semi-Angora; - the krysovidny hamster, unlike other breeds, has the extended trunk and longer trimmed tail; - the Dzungarian hamster differs in the pointed muzzle and small ears, soles of his paws are densely covered with wool; - Roborovsky's hamster has a snub-nosed muzzle and quite large ears, soles of paws, also as at the Dzungarian breed, are strongly trimmed; - Campbell's hamster differs in the round head and a short muzzle.
