Guinea pigs – one of the few species of mammals which can be contained in house conditions. It is easy to look after them, they do not require a lot of attention. Guinea pigs are the good-natured, quiet animals who are not causing any trouble or harm to owners. Veterinarians advise to buy them at the age of about five weeks when small animals are capable to begin independent life. Choosing couple of guinea pigs, it is important to know their floor not to get the whole nursery of these animals.

1. girlguinea pigIt is possible to distinguish the boy and on external signs. Males, as a rule, are larger than females, have high withers and strong frame. A number of nipples at pigs is not a floor indicator as they are both at boys, and at girls. On appearance it is easy to define a sex of adult individuals, with young guinea pigs there can be some difficulties as at cubs and young small animals sexual distinctions are still poorly expressed.
2. If you need to distinguish a male from a cub female (age more than three weeks) or the teenager of a guinea pig, it is necessary to examine genitals of an animal. Turn a small animal on a back that pads were directed up, reliably and strong you hold him by a back. Look at the place where genitals are located, it has letter Y form. At females the anus and genitals are located enough far apart, at males between them small distance. If you do not see distinctions, compare among themselves several more individuals, find animals with obvious differences.
3. Examine an anus of a guinea pig. For this purpose take an animal for front pads, turn a paunch up. Clasp with the right hand a mumps for a waist and press a thumb a stomach bottom over genitals. Press slightly, easily, then it is possible to strengthen pressing a little. If it is a male, then under a thumb the camber – a penis which will lean out outside over time will be felt. Externally it it is visible in the form of a point at top of a Y-shaped crack. At females the long crack to a tail, too in the form of Y which leg is directed to a tail will be felt. Girls guinea pigs have no cambers.
4. If all of you doubt concerning a sex of a guinea pig, carefully delay a thin skin on genitals of a small animal towards a paunch. At a female a part of a mucous membrane, at a male – a small genital will be visible. It completely will dispel your doubts and will help to confirm a sex of an animal.
