Diabetes – quite widespread disease of elderly domestic cats requiring from owners of special care and close attention to the choice of the mode of food and structure of a forage of pets.

1. Before defining a diet for a sick cat, consultation of the veterinarian who will specify a type of the found diabetes and will give advice at the choice of food is necessary. If the cat or a cat during life ate natural products, but not specialized sterns, it is the best of all to analyze and minimize amount of the carbohydrates coming to food (them there have to be no more than 5%). In particular, it means that grain products, rice and corn porridges, soy additives should not get to a forage. Natural food for the animals sick with diabetes, has to be as close as possible to a diet of a wild cat: from 50% of all arriving food have to make proteins (crude beef, pork, chicken, an offal), 20 - 25% of fats (fermented milk products, in particular cottage cheese and sour cream) and carbohydrates of plant origin (raw vegetables and fruit). It is worth feeding cats with diabetes in the small portions 2-3 times a day, at insulin-dependent diabetes combining feeding time of a prick insulin over time.
2. When feeding the pet dry feeds it is worth studying carefully offered range. The forages containing razvarenny beer rice, cornmeal or corn porridge, barley and soy protein at once should be excluded from a food allowance. The structure of a good dry feed suitable for the cats sick with diabetes, have to include only meat flour (pork, chicken, beef, fish), ground cellulose (as a source of food fibers, valuable to diabetics), natural fragrances and fats. If the cat psychologically is able to switch to a tinned forage, it is better to feed her with canned food.
3. The tinned forages used for feeding of cats with diabetes on structure are similar to dry. At them surely there has to be an animal protein, fat, cellulose. You should not feed a cat with sterns in which the percent of carbohydrates makes more than 10. The feeding mode canned food also assumes food in the small portions 2-3 times a day, it is no more.
4. The cats sick with diabetes of any type, it is strictly forbidden to feed with tasty, but very harmful chips, sausages and other food which animals like to elicit at owners. It can lead to exacerbation of a disease, also improper feeding increases animal weight. At diabetes it is necessary to keep the pet's weight under strict control: not to allow to overeat to full cats and, on the contrary, to finish feeding to normal weight (normal for breed, the size and age of a cat) thin. The treating veterinarian is obliged to give more exact information on each specific animal.
