For control over process of growth and development of young dogs, definition of their proportions on compliance to standards of breed, measurement of their sizes is taken. Measurements are objective addition to estimated by eye assessment and also carry out it to time of dog exhibitions. Height in withers is one of the main measurements at assessment of a dog on compliance to standards.

- - special measuring ruler;
- - measuring square.
Instruction
1. If you have no special measuring ruler which is used for determination of the sizes of a dog, manufacture independently measuring square. Take two bars of 20-25 cm and 5 cm in size, paste them at right angle to each other in the form of letter "G", along short bar paste a centimetric measured tape so that its zero mark was at the level of the lower plane of long bar. To increase measurement accuracy, attach a small plumb to inside of short bar – cargo on a cord.
2. Choose the place where you will measure height of a dog in withers. It has to stand on a plain surface – on a floor, on a table (if it is a dog of small breed) or on the platform with solid and equal soil. If you take regular measurements of a young dog for the purpose of control of her development, then carry out them always at the same time day, before feeding.
3. Put a dog directly. Define where she has withers – the highest point of a back if the dog costs quietly. It is formed by the first five vertebras of back department of a backbone. Visually it can be defined as the small eminence between a neck and a back of a dog.
4. That the dog did not worry if you make measurements for the first time, let's it sniff at tools. After the dog makes sure that they do not constitute any danger to it, start measurements. For this purpose put a measuring ruler or a corner to withers of a dog. Impose the tool precisely on withers, apply it so that it adjoined to a body of a dog, but pressed it. At a long-haired dog sort in this place wool on a hair parting. You watch that the ruler stood in strictly vertical position. If measurements are performed by a corner, the tape should not concern a plumb, it has to be parallel to it and strictly vertical.
