1. The main function of soil – it is substrate for strengthening of plants. Some aquarians, to facilitate cleaning of an aquarium, do not use sand or pebble at all, but if you want that the aquarium performed also decorative function, it is better to use soil after all. The organisms processing dead organic chemistry into useful substances and cleaning an aquarium live in it. In addition, carbonic acid reserves which affect buffer action of water are stored in soil.
2. When choosing soil pay attention that it should not emit soluble substances in water, should not be with keen edges not to wound fishes and has to be we penetrate for water. Usually as soil use river sand or pebble. To make sure that soil suits you, on it it is enough to splash vinegar. If after that on a surface bubbles or foam did not appear, so this soil can be used.
3. If you decided not to buy soil in shop, and to prepare it independently, go to the next stream or the river behind coarse river sand. Surely purify soil from impurity – sticks, parts of seaweed, pieces of paper.
4. Take a sieve and sift sand through it. Ruthlessly throw out all that passes in a sieve, all the same in use in an aquarium it is unsuitable and will only pollute water. Repeat the procedure several times then start soil washing.
5. Carefully wash out soil under warm flowing water, constantly stirring slowly with it. It is necessary that soil was completely purified from small particles. The better you will wash out sand, the quicker water in an aquarium will become transparent, and you will be able to occupy fishes there.
6. If desired, soil can be disinfected. For this purpose wash it with weak solution of potassium permanganate then do not forget to rinse sand in flowing water again.
7. Now soil can be used in an aquarium. Lay its even layer 4-7 centimeters and begin to create the underwater kingdom.
