The Indian sort the Asian elephant has only one modern appearance under the name, other representatives of this sort died out.

It is quite simple to distinguish on appearance of elephants – inhabitants of Africa and India if to know several characteristic signs. First of all it is the size – the African elephants above, it is more and heavier. They grow to four-five meters in height, in length are extended up to 7.5 meters, and about 7 tons weigh. Their Indian fellows seldom have the sizes over 3 meters and more long 6.5, and about 3 tons weigh.

They have more dark coloring sometimes till brown color, and their Indian brothers gray, with more smooth skin covered with small hairs. It is very easy to distinguish elephants on ears: Africans have them huge, by the size there are more heads reaching in length of one and a half meters. They have rounded shape, stick out a little up and are widely placed on the parties. Indians cannot brag of such large ears: they are modest, in several dozen centimeters, angular and directed down, with the pointed end. Representatives of the African look go with a direct back, at some elephants the ridge even a little concave. And the convex back because of what they seem sad and hung in comparison with their stately companions from Africa is characteristic of an Asian look.
