Many people in the childhood feel various fears, for example, of darkness. However sometimes the fear turns into something bigger, capable to prevent full-fledged human life. In that case it is possible to speak about a phobia.

What is a phobia?

The phobia, or phobic anxiety disorder, represents irrational uncontrollable fear, steady manifestations of any fears. In psychiatry phobias call pathologically increased manifestation of reaction of fear to any irritant.

In other words, the phobia is the persuasive fear expressed, strongly shown which it is irreversible becomes aggravated in certain situations and does not give in to a logical explanation. Also phobias can be shown as the irrational relation of hostility to something, in obviously hostility. In this case the fear as emotion is veiled and is present at the second plan.

In the presence of a phobia of people diligently avoids the object inspiring it fear. In many cases the phobia is aggravated to the fact that the person, for example, feeling a panic at the sight of elevators, prefers to rise in office on foot provided that the meeting takes place on the thirty sixth floor and began ten minutes ago.

Variety of phobias

The majority of phobias was given own name for a long time. Besides, there is even alphabetical catalog of phobias. Among them there is also quite explainable, for example, an agrizoofobiya – fear of wild animals. The name of an aviophobia – fear of flights on the plane speaks for itself. Agirofobiya will prevent the person to go outside, and the arachnophobia is characteristic of those who fall into a panic and feel uncontrollable horror at the sight of spiders. Perhaps, one of the most unusual phobias – an afobofobiya. Consists in fear of absence of phobias. Not less the apliumofobiya – fear of garlic surprises. It is not recommended to give festive bouquets to the people suffering from fear of flowers – an antofobiya. Suffering from an apifobiya – fear of bees and wasps – will hardly agree to an excursion on an apiary, and suffering from an akhluofobiya – fear of darkness and night – will not begin to sleep at the turned-off light. Probably, one of the most widespread phobias – a blattofobiya – fear of cockroaches. The botanophobia is a fear of plants, a blennofobiya – fear of slime, a battofobiya – fear of deep reservoirs. Claustrophobia – fear of the closed space is also familiar to much. Contrary to it the agoraphobia – fear of open spaces is necessary. There are also interesting phobias which are characterized by fear of national things. For example, Anglophobia – fear of all English, and a galifobiya (or a frankofobiya) – fear of all French. Sometimes the things seeming to most of people lovely and pleasant are perceived by some people as something frightening. The people suffering from a galeofobiya – fear of polecats and caresses, a gatofobiya – fear of domestic cats and cats, a gippofobiya – fear of horses hold such opinion. Some of the most widespread are a demofobiya (or an okhlofobiya) – fear of crowd and congestions of people, a dentophobia – fear of dentists, stomatologists and dental care, a zemmiphobia – fear of rats, an arophobia – fear of height.
