How to teach the child to divide words into syllables

Division of words into syllables is one of bases of training of the child in reading. This skill allows not only to combine letters among themselves, but also to find understanding of how from letters words turn out. Not always understanding of syllables comes to the child easily, but parents can help the kid with this question.

Instruction

1. You should not hurry especially with a question of how to teach the child to divide words into syllables. At first the kid has to remember the alphabet and understand the principle of connection of letters among themselves. The mistake of many parents is that they try to teach the kid to put single letters, it interferes with further division of words into syllables. Respectively, reading development process also slows down. The child has to read both letters of a syllable in uniform merge. It allows to avoid the problems connected with misunderstanding of the basic principle of folding of words from syllables.

2. When these skills are set, concentrate attention of the child not in words, and on the sounds said by it. The phonetics affects quality of reading hardly no more, than knowledge of letters. Suggest the child to observe the mouth in a mirror during pronunciation of words. So he will be able to understand that the shape of lips changes at pronunciation of syllables, but not separate letters.

3. If the kid cannot understand how syllables develop in words, it is possible to offer rather easy way. For this purpose the child needs to suggest to hold a palm around a neck, under a jaw. The feeling of pressure upon a hand allows to experience the movement of a mouth at pronunciation. The simplest word for production of an experiment is "mom" or others terms available and habitual to children's hearing. But also more compound words are not less easily displayed on syllables, it is necessary to show a little patience only.

4. It is necessary to begin a similar training with disyllabic words as it is the simplest to display them on syllables. Gradually you pass to those words which consist of three and more syllables, for example "milk" or "cow". That occupation did not seem too boring, it is the best of all for children to carry out division of words into syllables in playful way. The words which are spread out to syllables and taken from the habitual counting rhyme are perceived much easier.
