Parenthood as psychological phenomenon

Parenthood as psychological phenomenon

It is difficult to overestimate a role of parents in formation of the identity of the child. Bringing up the son or the daughter, imparting skills of self-service and also the system of values accepted in family, the father and mother in many respects build up character of the child, his habit, manner, the attitude towards other people.

1. Caring for the offspring, bringing up him, giving him warm-heartedness, care, attention, parents also influence on themselves. Therefore parenthood is a peculiar psychological phenomenon. The father and mother are more senior, is more skilled, than their child (especially when he still small, absolutely helpless and defenseless). Therefore parents have an instinctive desire to protect, sponsor the kid, to preserve it against troubles, dangers, to learn and edify. They quite often behave in the same way, even when the child became an adult and is able to take care of himself. Just it seems to them that their child can stumble, despite age and life experience.

2. The important feature of parenthood from the psychological point of view is a sense of responsibility. When in family there is a kid, the father and mother along with great joy feel so big burden of responsibility. Depends on them now that the child not only grew up the healthy, well-mannered, clever person, but also became the worthy citizen of the country, the useful member of society.

3. Parenthood also plays a large role in strengthening of the matrimonial relations, can give a new impulse to feelings between the husband and the wife. Spouses are grateful each other for incomparable happiness of paternity and motherhood. The first (let still unconscious) the child's smile, his first uncertain attempts to grab a toy, to creep and turn over, – all this causes in them not only tenderness and affection, but also instinctive pride at the thought: "It is our child!"

4. Presence of the child in family disciplines parents, causes in them conscious desire to reasonably limit the needs for the interests of the kid. When the child grows up and begins as if a sponge "to absorb" everything that sees and hears in the family circle, the fact of its presence makes the disciplining impact. Parents are forced to watch closely themselves, the acts and words not to give to the son or the daughter of a bad example. In terms of psychology it is very effective educational method.

5. At last, it is psychologically easier for parents who know that to them, as well as all living beings, the term is measured to reconcile with a thought of inevitable death if they have a child – their continuation on this Earth. They understand that the child will not throw them in old age, will support, as well as they supported him when it was still small.
