How to define the port number

To all computer programs interacting with the Internet, the operating system will select any given ports. Sometimes the user has a need to learn what ports are open on its machine or on the remote computer.

Instruction

1. To learn what ports are open on your computer, start the command processor, having selected "Start-up – All programs – Standard – the Command line" and make the netstat team – aon. Click Enter. You will see the list of connections. In the graph "Local Address" near the addresses also port numbers are specified.

2. You can learn what program uses the port interesting you. Pay attention to the last column – PID. In it identifiers of processes are specified, with their help it is possible to learn what program opens any given port. It is possible to make it in two ways.

3. Open the Task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del), in the View menu open the Select Columns point. Give a mark in the line "Process identifier". In a window of the Task manager the column PID will appear. Now you can look at a process identifier of the application using the port interesting you in a window of the command line and in the Task manager to identify a name of process of the application by the identifier. If the name tells nothing to you, gather it in the searcher, and you obtain all information on this process and the appropriate program.

4. You can obtain the same information, having gathered in the same place, in the command line, the tasklist command. There will be a process list with their identifiers. Farther everything just as in the previous step – compare port, the identifier and a name of process for obtaining information necessary for you.

5. Sometimes there is a need to define numbers of open ports on the remote computer. The special programs scanning ports of the computer and defining what of them are open are for this purpose used. One of the best programs such is the Nmap scanner. Exists as its console version, and with a window interface, usual for users of Windows.

6. Very powerful research complex is the Metasploit Framework program, in its structure there is also Nmap. For check of the remote computer you can use also the XSpider program. The same program you can check and safety of own computer – enter address 127.0.0.1 and start scanning. The program will show not only open ports, but also the existing vulnerabilities.
