How to optimize the swap file

The swap file serves as addition to random access memory of the computer and allows to use its bigger quantity, than in is mute is installed physically. A part of memory is placed on the hard drive, allowing to start applications to which insufficiently physical random access memory.

It is required to you

  • The computer with the installed Windows XP, 7 or Vista operating system.

Instruction

1. To optimize the swap file on the computer with the installed Windows 7 or Vista operating system, open "Control panel" and turn into category "System and Safety". On the opened page pass into the section "System". Click the Additional Parameters of a System point which is located in the left side window. In the appeared Properties of a System window go to In the addition tab on which click "Parameters" located in the section "High-speed performance". On the screen the High-speed Performance Parameters window in which click "Change" located on In the addition tab will appear.

2. For optimization of the swap file on computers with the installed Windows XP operating system, open "Control panel" and turn into category "Performance and Service". On the opened page of category click the System icon. On the screen the Properties of a System window in which go to In the addition tab and click "Parameters" in the section "High-speed performance" will be displayed. In the opened window go to In the addition tab and click "Change".

3. On the screen the Virtual memory window will appear. This window allows to set more optimum swap file parameters, than parameters for your work which are used by the operating system by default.

4. The swap file is located on a cruel disk of the computer, reading speed in which decreases from its beginning by the end. Therefore to receive the maximum speed of work of the swap file, arrange it whenever possible on the very first hard drive partition. For this purpose select all other sections from the list of the window located in the top half, select for them the Without Swap File checkbox and click "Set".

5. You can also change swapping file size, having made it more optimum. By default the Windows operating system itself selects swapping file size. At first she sets its size minimum possible to save as much as possible free space to the hard drive. As soon as becomes of the size set by the operating system a little, it automatically increases it. At this moment the computer can hang up for several seconds. If increase in the size happens rather often, work with the computer becomes uncomfortable.

6. You can turn off automatic size variation of the swap file, at once having set for it the suitable size. For this purpose select the section on which the swap file is located in the list and select a checkbox for the Specify the Size point. Specify the minimum file size of swapping which will not demand its frequent increase in operating time in the field "Initial Size" in megabytes. Also specify the maximum size which the system for the swap file in the field "Maximum Size" can select. It should be rather big to cover all your needs for random access memory.

7. If your computer works running the Windows XP operating system and has amount of physical memory, sufficient for work, you can increase noticeably its high-speed performance, having completely disconnected the swap file. For this purpose select in turn all sections from the list on which the swap file can be placed and select for each of them a checkbox opposite to the Without Swap File point. For the Windows 7 and Vista operating systems the shutdown of the swap file can reduce on the contrary computer performance therefore for these operating systems it is undesirable to disconnect it completely.

8. After you finish change of settings of the swap file in the Virtual memory window, press in it the OK button and the Apply button in the High-speed Performance Parameters window. Then close all open windows and the started programs and reboot. After reset all settings made by you will become effective.
