Dry ice represents solid substance which is stored at temperatures below-70 degrees Celsius. It is impossible to produce a dry ice in large numbers in house conditions, but as an experiment, it is possible to receive its small dose.
It is required to you
- - carbon dioxide fire extinguisher;
- - pillowcase;
- - cardboard box;
- - adhesive tape.
Instruction
1. To make a dry ice in house conditions, you need the fire extinguisher. Pay attention that the fire extinguisher only on the basis of CO2 carbon dioxide is suitable for goals. Such devices are usually used in living conditions, for example, apartments, offices, restaurants, etc. When using the fire extinguisher surely put on gloves, hit of a dry ice on a hand can lead to a frostbite. Besides, don't concern a bell and a connecting tube, when using the fire extinguisher their temperature goes down to-72 degrees Celsius.
2. Take a pillowcase and densely wrap up in it a nozzle and a hose of the fire extinguisher. Wrap up a pillowcase so that not to lose the formed ice. Pressure of the fire extinguisher isn't so big, it won't be difficult to hold a pillowcase, but for bigger confidence it is possible to fix it by an adhesive tape.
3. Break a seal of the fire extinguisher and pull out to the check. Press the lever and hold it within 2–3 seconds, you will be surrounded by thick steam, don't worry, it is normal. You don't receive a lot of ice, but its small amount will accumulate on pillowcase inside.
4. Remove a pillowcase from the fire extinguisher, strong holding a nozzle. From the inside of a pillowcase you will find a number of a dry ice in the friable state reminding polyfoam. Try not to scatter ice and not to touch it hands, it has very low temperature, about-78 degrees Celsius. To get a frostbite, only several seconds are enough to take of it.
5. For long-term storage and prevention of sublimation of a dry ice shift it in a cardboard box which walls are upholstered with a thick layer of polyfoam. Try to prevent air circulation in it, for this purpose stick together polyfoam joints an adhesive tape. If desired ice can be condensed by means of any flat subject, for example banks or a glass with a flat bottom.
