Cold attic or warm: technologies of arrangement of subroofing space

The subroofing space is both cold, and warm. In terms of arrangement, the cold and warm attic differ among themselves on way of warming, on way of the device of the air shaft of roofing "pie", on method of application of any given heater and, certainly, on way of further operation.

Cold and warm attic. What to choose?

Not warmed roof (cold attic), as a rule, is the acceptable decision for those who have no plans for operation of the attic. Such decision perfectly is suitable for people for whom the available living space from below quite is enough. Advantages of cold attic-floor room consist in the following:

  • economy of money and forces (it is not necessary to warm the cold attic either at all, or is many times simpler and cheaper, than warm);
  • use of not warmed attic-floor room as cold warehouse for storage of things which there was no place in living rooms.

The warm attic is suitable option for those who need to organize additional living space under roof. In particular, attics equip under children's rooms, under recreation rooms. In this case it is possible to receive the full-fledged second floor without fabulous monetary costs of its special construction. That it was pleasant to live in the warmed subroofing space, it will be is rather competent to be warmed. The warmed attic will become not less comfortable for accommodation, than normal living rooms.

Arrangement of the attic by means of laying of heater

In the designs which are available in cold subroofing space, heater should be put directly in "pie" of ceiling or to cover it over overlapping. At the same time the rafter system remains not warmed. The similar technology of arrangement is relevant for unexploited attic-floor rooms. Therefore in this case it is absolutely unimportant what will be laid over rafters – rigid or soft roof.

Arrangement of attic-floor room of cold type allows to save considerably money since heater keeps within only on wooden overlapping which area is much less, than the area of the big subroofing slopes heat-insulated in case with the warm attic about which it is written below.

The scheme of arrangement of warm attic-floor room assumes monetary expenses many times more expensively, than arrangement of the cold attic as on thermal insulation of slopes of roof a lot of heater and material for waterproofing will be required. If the subroofing space is operated on mind, then together with thermal insulation of slopes also its overlapping is warmed. In that case heater will become also the sound insulator.

Arrangement of the attic by means of ventilation

The scheme of ventilation in cold subroofing space assumes availability of ventilating pro-spirits in roofing eaves. It works so: when warm air comes out via the special aerators and roof windows placed in upper part of roof, it is substituted by cold air which arrives through the lower pro-spirits. So in attic-floor room the full plenum ventilation which principle – level differences of arrangement of air vents turns out.

The scheme of ventilation in warm subroofing space means the device of the ventilating duct located on all area of subroofing slopes. For this purpose under roofing overlapping the furring and counterfurring is mounted. Then warm air will begin to come to attic-floor room at the level of eaves, then will rise upward and will come out via the aerator formed by roofing level.

Warming of overlappings of cold attic-floor rooms

About the warm attic here the speech cannot go as all described below heaters – prerogative of overlappings of cold attic-floor rooms. The technology of warming of cold subroofing space, as a rule, means use of mineral wool which is thermal insulation basis. So, works are performed on the following scheme.

  • Vapor barrier. At first the cold attic should be isolated from steam. It is obligatory stage if further as heater mineral wool is applied. The purpose of vapor barrier is not to give couple from below through overlapping to get into minvata fibers. Damp cotton wool gains additional heat conductivity that does warming useless. For the device of vapor barrier it is necessary to lay paroizolyatsionny membrane over ceiling overlapping.
  • Laying of mineral wool. Plates of minvata should be put in 2-3 layers between logs. Cotton wool keeps within so that the top layer blocked gaps between plates in base layer, and the general thickness of heater was not less than 10 cm Besides, on the heater laid level with top log it is necessary to fill wooden or plywood flooring.

The technology of warming of overlappings of cold attic-floor room can be made not only by means of mineral wool, but also by means of ceramsite charge with fraction of 1.5 cm and more. Works on this type of warming are performed as follows.

  • Vapor barrier. As haydite, as well as the minvat, well absorbs moisture, intervals between logs should be covered paroizolyatsionny membrane in advance.
  • Haydite charge. Only after mounting of vapor barrier it is necessary to fill up and level haydite in intervals.
  • Further it is necessary to lay plywood sheets (or other sheet material). It becomes for two reasons: first, in that case the ceramsite charge will not pull moisture from air, secondly, on overlapping it will be possible to move freely.

Other heaters for the cold attic

  • Expanded polystyrene plates. Polyfoam needs to be stacked in intervals between log in 2-3 layers to eliminate cold bridges. The waterproofing is not required.
  • Polyurethane foam. Frothed material is evaporated on overlapping. Interacting with air, it gains volume and will be polymerized then – hardens.
  • Ecocotton wool. Is cellulose product with which it is possible to fill intervals between logs or to pour out over overlapping.
  • As well as cellulose, is excellent ecomaterial, however at set of humidity the heat conductivity of sawdust increases that it is good not to eat. Besides, sawdust is favourite haven of rodents.
