How many the sheet of gypsum cardboard weighs: as it is correct to use this parameter

The first prototypes of gypsum cardboard have appeared in the 19th century and represented fragile material from ten layers. Modern analogs include only three layers: two sheets of construction paper or cardboard and the plaster layer located between them. New manufacturing techniques provide high strength and reliability of material.

Main data on gypsum cardboard

Gypsum cardboard is widely applied in household and commercial construction to finishing of walls and ceiling, used for creation of arches, niches and other design elements. On bearing surface it can be fixed by means of glue structures or screws on frame furring. The specifics of use of material affect also its geometrical characteristics. So, there are conditional standards of thickness depending on installation site:

Besides, select several standards of length of leaf. With invariable width in 1200 mm it can be 2000, 2500 or 3000 mm. Sheets of 1.2 by 2.5 m in size meet most often.

The size and thickness of plate directly influence its weight. Besides, weight characteristics of products depend also on grade of the used plaster. Besides normal, waterproof and fire-resistant structures with the changed density and special chemical additives are applied. In specialized retail chain stores it is also possible to buy fibrous gypsum cardboard of the increased durability and noise-insulating material on the basis of plaster weight.

Standard weight of sheet of gypsum cardboard

Nominal ratios of mass of various components of material are established by state standards. Now the following proportion is widespread:

Depending on the accepted production technique, shares of components and the actual weight of each leaf can differ from rated a little.

Types of gypsum cardboard and average mass of standard sheets following:

Formulas of calculation of weight

If you work with sheets of non-standard types and the sizes, or need calculation of approximate mass of all plasterboard design, it is better to use special formulas of determination of weight.

Calculation for the area

If the area of future design is known, to define how many it will weigh, will not be special work. For this purpose use formula:

m=S*k, where: m – lump; S – area; k – the constant designating dependence of weight on thickness of plate.

For arch gypsum cardboard 6.5 mm thick accept value of constant 5 kg*m2, for material 9.5 mm thick of k=7.5 kg*m2, for sheets of the standard of 12.5 mm k=9.5 kg*m2.

The area of rectangular surfaces is found on formula:

S=a*b, where: a – length of surface, m; b – width of surface, m.

Then the initial formula will take form: m = a*b*k

Let's assume that you need to calculate how many the plasterboard design 12.5 mm thick for wall 6 m long indoors with room height of 2.5 m will weigh.

For the set k=9.5 thickness of plate kg*m2. The wall sizes (6m*2.5m) are values an and b. Let's carry out calculation for formula: m = a*b*k. Let's receive: m = 6*2.5*9.5=142.5 (kg).

Therefore, the lump of gypsum cardboard which will be established on wall will be 142.5 kg.

Calculation for material density

From school course of physics it is known that the mass of any material can be found, knowing its density (specific weight) and volume. This formula looks so:

m=p*V, where: m – lump; p – gypsum cardboard density (about 1350 kg/m3); V – the volume occupied with gypsum plasterboards.

It is inconvenient and senseless to calculate the mass of one plasterboard design on such formula, however it can be useful for determination of mass of material at its loading or transportation, and without damage of transport packing. For this purpose it is necessary to express the volume of pack of sheets through its geometrical sizes:

V=a*b*h, where: a – length of stack, m; b – width of stack, m; h – height, m.

Then the initial formula will take form: m=p*a*b*h

Let's assume that you need to calculate how many the gypsum cardboard pack with sizes of 2500*1200*400 mm weighs. Let's substitute these values in formula, previously having transformed them to meters: m=p*a*b*h. It turns out: m=1350*2.5*1.2*0.4=1620 (kg)

As you can see, in this case we are interested in neither the geometrical sizes, nor thickness of each single sheet at all.

Use of information on the mass of building material

The mass of gypsum cardboard is found for determination of features of transportation of cargo and nuances of mounting of sheets. It is important to understand in advance what framework structure will sustain loading and what is not present. For this purpose the received values of weight compare with nominal ultimate strength of elements of framework.

With increase in mass of design also thickness of frame galvanized profile has to increase. The distance between framework cross-pieces, on the contrary, has to decrease. It is not less important to take care of quality and rather strong fixing materials: self-tapping screws for gypsum plasterboards and so-called "fleas" for joining of profile.
