How to calculate heating services volume

How to calculate heating services volume

At installation of heating devices in residential buildings, process and office buildings quite often it is required to know heating services volume. It is good when such data are provided by the customer, but it happens not always. There are techniques of assessment of total amount of system and its separate components depending on power.

Instruction

1. For calculation of volume of the heat carrier in heating system at its replacement or reconstruction use the special calculation tables which are available in the reference media. So, one section of aluminum radiators has the volume of the heat carrier of 0.45 l., section of new pig-iron batteries – 1 l., section of old pig-iron batteries – 1.7 l. In one running meter of pipe with a diameter of 15 mm – 0.177 l of the heat carrier and if pipes by diameter, for example, of 32 mm are used, then volume will be 0.8 l and so on.

2. One of widespread cases when it is required to find out heating services volume – installation of expansion tank and make-up pumps. At the same time calculate the total volume of heating services by addition of volumes of boiler, heating appliances (radiators) and pipeline part of system on formula: V = (VS x E) / d, where V - the volume of expansion tank; VS - the total amount of system (boiler, radiators, pipes, heat exchangers etc.); Е - liquid expansion coefficient (as a percentage); d - efficiency of expansion tank.

3. When calculating consider such factor as liquid expansion. For water heating services it approximately is 4%. In case of use in the system of ethylene glycol the coefficient of expansion will make about 4.4%.

4. For less exact calculation of volume of heating services use the formula based on power: 1 kW = 15 l. For such approximate calculations it is required to know heating services power, at the same time need in details to count the volume of pipelines, radiators, the boiler and other elements of system disappears. Example: if heating power for residential building is equal to 50 kW, then the total volume of heating services VS pays off so: VS = 15 x 50 = 750 l.

5. When carrying out calculations consider that in case of application in heating services of new and modern radiators and pipes the volume of system will be a little smaller. Detailed information can be found in technical documentation of the producer of the equipment.
