The electric devices working from alternating current surround us everywhere. At their connection it is necessary to distinguish three types of wires which exist in modern household electrical wiring. It is "phase", "zero" and "grounding".

- - voltmeter;
- - indicator screw-driver;
- - potato.
Instruction
1. Use the most available method of definition of phase and distinguish conductors on color marking of wires. Remember that the phase wire has black-brown tone, "zero" is marked in blue color, and the earth wire is painted in flavovirent tone. At one-color wiring on the ends of threads of the electric highway special insulating tubules – cambrics which have the corresponding color indication are usually established.
2. If the electric line is not marked in color, determine its phase element by the voltmeter. Adjust the device on the corresponding tension and measure its value between two any the taken wires. The motionless arrow of the voltmeter signals about use "zero" and earth wires.
3. The corresponding measurement between phase and "zero" wires and also between two phase elements of electrical circuit will show potential difference about what fluctuation of arrow of the device signals. Consider that the measurement with earth wire will show big difference on voltmeter scale.
4. If it is impossible to use the voltmeter, use the normal indicator screw-driver. In interaction with phase element of electrical circuit the bulb of the indicator will light up. The lack of this option is that to identify the grounding and "zero" wire the indicator screw-driver it is impossible.
5. In extreme cases use the alternative, but connected with the increased danger method of definition of "phase". Deenergize electrical wires and insert them into fresh cut of potato at some distance of each other, without allowing emergence of short circuit. For one-two seconds give tension on wires. Determine phase element of electrical circuit by the site of potato which has turned blue near it.
