How to keep dahlias

Dahlias – perennial dolgotsvetushchy plants which inflorescences has the most various form and wide range of coloring. Such richness of the choice does this flower by true pleasure for collectors who are engaged in cultivation and selection of these great colors, at the end of summer and early autumn decorating gardens and beds. After the end of blossoming the tubers of dahlias need to be removed on winter storage.

Instruction

1. As soon as strike the first frosts, elevated part of flower blackens and hangs. It is signal for the flower grower that it is already time to dig out dahlia roots that they have not frozen in the winter. Secateurs cut off upper part of stalk, having left 10-15 cm from earth surface. Accurately shovel not to damage tuber, dig round it and take root. Select tubers of the big size which have managed to ripen fully during the summer on storage.

2. Slightly rub off them and clean from the stuck earth, place in basin with water and well wash out each rhizome. Then pour clear water and dissolve in it a little potassium permanganate. Saturation of solution has to be average degree, it should not be neither dark, nor very light. Submerge in it the washed-out tubers for half an hour, during this time all pathogenic microbes which are in soil will be destroyed.

3. Get tubers from solution of potassium permanganate and spread out for drying to the outspread newspapers or paper towels. Hollow parts of stalks have to dry that at storage of plants the mold was not formed.

4. Lay paper layer bottom of plywood or trellised plastic box, fill on it layer of the dry earth or sawdust, over it lay dry tubers and across them fill the earth or sawdust again. Make several such layers, do not fill box yet. Put atop the sheet of paper and carry box to the room for storage.

5. Any dark cool and dry room in which it is possible to arrange special racks for boxes with dahlias will be suitable for storage. The humidity about 70% and temperature of 3-6 degrees of Page will be the best conditions for their storage.
