How to keep moisture in the soil

Moisture is necessary for plants for growth and the correct development. Experienced gardeners consider that preservation of moisture in the soil is much more important than additional waterings. The main ways of preservation of moisture consist in scarification and mulching.

It is required to you

  • - polyethylene film;
  • - the nonwoven mulching fabric;
  • - mulch.

Instruction

1. One of the most known ways to detain in the soil moisture after rain or watering is loosening which is called sometimes dry watering. Loosen the earth to destroy the crust which is formed when drying the soil and capillaries which moisture climbs to earth surface.

2. Under trees in orchard three-four times during the summer recommend to loosen the soil. Beds with plants which root system is much shorter than roots of fruit-trees and bushes should be loosened accurately after each watering. Loosening can be combined with removal of weeds.

3. It is possible to reduce moisture evaporation, having covered the soil with nonwoven fabric or mulch. Of course, it is possible to detain moisture, having covered the earth with polyethylene film, but this method is used, generally at prorashchivaniye of seeds. The film does not pass not only water, but also air.

4. If you use film for detention of moisture in the soil, from time to time remove it to air landings and to water plants. In hot weather the air temperature and soils under such ukryvny material sharply increases that affects green plantings not highly.

5. The nonwoven mulching fabrics, unlike polyethylene film, well pass air, detaining at the same time moisture in the earth. Straighten nonwoven fabric on bed and fix its edges.

6. Make crosswise cuts in those places where you are going to plant plants. If on bed one-year culture is grown up, remove ukryvny material from the earth after harvesting. On beds with perennial plants such material will serve about five years.

7. In the soil will often be applied mulching by means of bulks to detention of moisture. After the surface of the soil dries out in the spring, you podrykhlit the earth and strew it with the mulching material. The layer of mulch has to be from six to ten centimeters thick. On pristvolny circles of trees and bushes it is possible to leave this layer till fall and then to dig over together with the earth. The mulch layer used on landings of wild strawberry after harvesting should be removed from beds.

8. As friable mulch it is possible to use peat, sawdust, needles, spill, wood bark, shell of pine nuts and coconut substrate.
