How to make clematises ready for the winter

Clematises very popular flowers. They are applied to decoration of walls, fences, gazebos, garden arches and so on. But not all know how to make clematises ready for the winter.

All high-quality clematises need to be covered for the winter. It is caused by their bad frost resistance. But before the shelter it is necessary to carry out cutting of these blossoming bushes.

Cutting of clematises

All clematises conditionally are divided into three groups:

1.      Plants on which flowers develop on escapes of last year

2.      Plants on which the main blossoming happens on escapes of the current year

3.      Flowers are formed on all escapes without exception.

Depending on belonging of clematises to any given group also make their cutting.

Plants of the first group are grown up without cutting, and only sick and strongly dense bushes are removed in the fall. Clematises of the second group cut off almost completely to the basis in the fall or leave two lower knots. Flowers of the third group demand more detailed approach to this process. Even in the summer on them after the end of blossoming delete part of escapes of last year which blossomed. And already directly in the fall before the shelter shorten escapes of the current year on 1/3 part. Such cutting allows plants to winter well and correctly forms bushes.

How to cover clematises for the winter

After the correct cutting start the shelter of plants for the winter. For this purpose with approach of constant frosts in not rainy weather of plant powder with the earth layer up to 20 cm. Then long clematises carefully bend down and display on the earth on fir-tree branches, and from above powder with leaves, sand or peat. Atop again cover with fir twigs. It protects flowers from various rodents. Clematises which cut off almost to the basis demand necessary leaving too. They can be covered with buckets or boxes without bottom, to fill up from above with dry leaves and to cover with fir twigs.

Also it is possible to cover clematises for the winter by means of framework. It is made of wire and covered with film or roofing material. It is too dense you should not cover clematises – it can lead to plant pereprevaniye.

In the spring with approach of sunny days the shelter begins to be removed gradually. And with establishment of above-zero temperatures delete completely. At first buds of clematises cover from impact of the bright spring sun. At this moment the soil is loosened and disinfected by means of lime milk (on bucket of water of 200 g of lime).

Here such events need to be held with clematises to make them ready for the winter.
