The need for measurement of the area of the apartment most often arises when its owner conceives to make repair, and it is necessary to calculate quantity of wall-paper, gypsum cardboard, linoleum and other construction materials. The total and living space is measured also at execution of the transaction on purchase and sale of the apartment or when obtaining documents for re-planning.

Instruction
1. To count consumption of building materials, the area of the apartment can be measured very simply. For a start draw by hand or by means of some graphic editor on the computer the approximate scheme of your apartment. Then take metal tape measure and measure length of each wall in its lower part, is slightly higher than plinth. Apply measuring results on your scheme.
2. The area of one room will be equal to the work of its length and width. If the room has irregular shape, i.e. in it there are some niches, ledges, corridors and so forth, then you have to separate this space into simple geometrical figures. And then calculate the area of each such figure. And, thus, the area of all room will be equal to the sum of the areas of figures.
3. If one of such figures – right triangle, it is necessary to measure the parties forming right angle and to multiply them, and then to halve the work. It will also be the area of your triangle.
4. The total area of the apartment in official order (for example, for BTI) is defined as the sum of the areas of all heated and cold rooms. But the area of floor which is not heated – loggias or balconies, terraces, verandahs, platforms or storerooms – is counted with so-called decreasing coefficients. I.e. the area of loggia is multiplied by 0.5, and the area of balcony or terrace – on 0.3, and the received work registers in documentation on the apartment.
5. Also there is such concept as the area of the apartment. Here only the heated rooms – inhabited, subsidiary and additional enter. To premises carry living rooms and bedrooms. To subsidiary – kitchens or kitchen zones, corridors in the apartment, halls, lobbies, the fitted cupboards, storerooms and sanitary and hygienic rooms. As additional rooms are considered wardrobe, laundry place, the dining room, library, the children's room, office, heatgenerating and so forth.
6. The measurements of the sizes of rooms which are carried out for official needs have the features. So, for example, they need to be measured on floor height without plinths. The area of the real furnace or fireplace (not decorative) does not join in room space. Also the area under ladder does not join in room space if height of this space from floor to bottom less than 1.6 m. Also the spaces occupied by door openings, arch apertures less than 2 m wide, niches less than 1.8 m high and the areas occupied by speakers elements of main walls do not undertake in attention. The area of balcony or loggia is determined by internal contour.
