Subwinter crops of onions allow to receive harvest for several weeks earlier, than at spring landing. At autumn crops, onions are less subject to attack of wreckers. But it is obligatory to follow some basic rules of landing of onion sets towards the winter.
After August harvesting the small onion sets (ovsyuzhka) are postponed separately. It is not suitable for long storage. During the winter such lukovichka will dry and will not be able to sprout. Therefore it is better to put ovsyuzhka towards the winter and the next year to receive fine onions. Such landings are less subject to influence of onions fly and also infection with mealy dew. It is possible to plant both small, and average onion sets in the fall, and even to seed onions seeds.
Time of subwinter crops of onions depends on the region in which you live. It is the best of all to do it at the end of October. But if for any reasons have not managed to make it in the put time, then be not upset. Sometimes even in November there is warm weather. It is possible to plant onions towards the winter at temperature from +3 degrees and above.
It is better to plant onion sets towards the winter on that place where before carrots grew. Their neighbourhood allows to protect plants from wreckers. Also onions badly grow on the beds fertilized by manure. She begins to be trained right after harvesting of carrots in the fall. The soil is dug over, leveled rake and powdered with dry leaves. After approach of steady night frosts the foliage is raked up and start landing of onion sets towards the winter. The bed is done up to 20 cm high, and the soil is fertilized compost. It is also possible to bring a little superphosphate.
