How to recognize mahogany

There are dozens of grades of mahogany. The name "red" for all breeds of this wood has come from common cashew tree (svitenevo tree). It is imported to Europe from the tropical countries and takes leading place in modern furniture production.

Instruction

1. Wood Makar, mahogany, beling, moving and seray have various shades. At these scattered and vascular deciduous breeds narrow sapwood. Range of flowers of kernel varies from white to dark brown shade.

2. Pay attention to color of tree which is formed under the influence of tannic, resinous, the dyes and oxides which are in wood. Common cashew, being the most widespread kind of makhagoniyevy breeds, goes generally on decorative and art hand-made articles. Wood has red core and greenish, and sometimes and light gray sapwood. The processed surface of common cashew gives small parallel strokes (sparks) grouped by strips.

3. Consider features of gloss of wood, that is its ability to reflect light streams under different corners. At common cashew tree the dark strips alternate with light. However if to look at them from the opposite side, the dark strip will turn into light and vice versa. The same will occur at change of the direction of lighting.

4. The common cashew slightly worse than other breeds behaves in thread: it is deprived of viscosity, sometimes is brittle and porous. The threaded product from mahogany after finishing darkens over time, however some of low grades of common cashew of pale red color do not change the tone.

5. At dark red of meranta (seraya) the sapwood on tone is lighter than kernel which gains dark red tone over time. On longitudinal sections rather narrow strokes or hyphens of gray color are quite often noted.

6. The sapwood in freshly-cut wood white merant does not differ from kernel and too has white color. But in the course of drying between them the accurate distinction appears: the kernel gains yellowy-brown or golden-brown color. Planed surfaces have gloss, radial cuts have the drawing from poorly distinguishable strips. Texture of wood moderate and large, uniform.
