1. Change is one of highlights in cultivation of orchid dendrobium. Substrate which rather attractively looks loses such properties as air permeability, normal acidity, balance of salts over time. The soil is condensed from frequent waterings and fertilizers: to roots of plant arrives less and less air. In addition from watering by substrate ph tap water gradually raises. Thereof the plant stops absorbing necessary elements from the environment. Roots often suffer from congestion of potash and phosphoric salts.
2. In view of all above, replace dendrobium each 2-3 years, and in some cases is even more often. If it is about just bought plant, then replace it right after blossoming or within the first year from the moment of purchase. Probability that the acquired flower is in substrate since the birth is high.
3. Spring time is considered the best for change of dendrobium. It is the period of the beginning of new growth of plant. During which new sprouts and roots often appear. Before pulling out orchid from pot, you remember its walls hands a little. Substrate will better give in. Of course, provided that walls of pot are made of plastic. Now try to extend flower. If attempts do not result in success, then whatever the pot was beautiful, break it or cut. If the root system of plant is developed very strongly, then to get rid of substrate really difficult. Roots intertwine among themselves. Weakened dendrobium it is much simpler to take from pot: just easily pull it up.
4. Now remove bark from rhizome of dendrobium. For this purpose pour warm water into basin and put orchid for 15-20 minutes (at most an hour) there. When substrate razmoknt, try to hype up and untangle roots by means of fingers. It is necessary to do it in water. The risk of damages is minimized. In time change dirty water in basin. If necessary use shower with small pressure. The water jet has to wash away substrate of roots, but not damage them. Do not try to clean off all bark: it is possible to leave pieces which have strongly eaten in roots.
5. After washing once again carefully see root system: remove all rotten and dry. Also remove the damaged sites: healthy fabric of root has white or green color. Consider that normal root system firm and strong to the touch, and the patient has emptiness. That the bacterial or fungal infection has not got into plant, surely disinfect the cutting objects alcohol or calcinate over fire. Powder places of cuts with wood charcoal, activated carbon or cinnamon.
6. Now dry roots of dendrobium within two hours. Indoor temperature has to be warm at this time. Very good option is to wash out plant roots in the evening and to leave for the night to dry. It is possible to start directly change in the morning. If you prepare substrate independently, then before change disinfect it: boil on fire within 3-4 minutes or fill in with boiled water for 10 minutes. After that drain water, and dry up substrate. Especially such procedure is recommended if mix exudes smell of forest mycelium. However the easiest way is to buy ready substrate in shop. Now choose the correct pot for dendrobium. Be guided by the size of root system: lower roots in pot, on each side there have to be 2 cm of free space. Such option the best. On bottom of pot put drainage layer: stones, haydite, polyfoam.
7. Correctly arrange dendrobium in pot: it has to be in the center. Later fill up plant roots with substrate, but leave pseudo-bulbs on surface. For stability thrust wooden sticks in substrate and tie to them plant. As soon as dendrobium densely becomes stronger, it will have new roots, props can be removed. At change in dry substrate water flower already in the course of this procedure. So, the soil will be stamped in the natural way. If you dried roots of dendrobium no more than 2 hours, then water it only in 2-4 days after change. Provide comfortable conditions for the replaced plant: moderate lighting and humidity. Air temperature has to be 20-22 °C.
