Vapor barrier: features of material and technology of application

Condensate – the worst enemy of building constructions of roofing system of the house. It slowly but surely destroys materials among which – heaters. As a result heat-insulating properties of the last considerably decrease. The paroizolyatsionny barrier, or vapor barrier will be able to protect roofing ""pie"" from negative impact of condensate.

What is vapor barrier?

The vapor barrier is the system of arrangement of subroofing space from so-called steam. In this case steam is not banal evaporation from the boiling water, and availability in air layers, comprising certain amount of the moisture (condensate) which is perniciously influencing the places and heaters which are not protected by paroizolyatsionny materials.

Why the parobaryer in roofing system is necessary?

The vapor barrier is necessary in case of internal warming of housing and when warming frame houses. It becomes for the purpose of protection of any given heater against moisture absorption: various heaters (for example, mineral wool) as if sponges, absorb the moisture which is airborne, i.e. that steam from which it is worth being isolated.

It leads to sharp decrease in heat-insulating properties of heaters, to emergence of mold fungus, to gradual destruction of material. Moreover, in subroofing space condensate from which both heater, and all building construction spoils often appears from behind considerable temperature difference. It leads to deterioration in conditions of accommodation.

Material for vapor barrier

At material selection which will be used for vapor barrier of the dwelling it is necessary to pay special attention to characteristics of durability of this material. For example, at paroizolyatsionny film of the same like durability can be different.

Also for isolation of roof from external moisture it is necessary to use strong material as it will be subject to different mechanical influences. Less strong film is suitable for isolation of subroofing space of wooden house of frame type. So, the known paroizolyatsionny materials are described below.

  • Paper roof covering. Until recently it was parent material for creation of parobaryer in rooms. Now paper roof covering is almost not used for these purposes. This results from the fact that material contains the cardboard which is not durable and strong.
  • Roofing material. The vapor barrier by means of roofing material does not lose now the relevance as its mounting is made to the rigid flooring made of plates of OSB which, in turn, are beaten to boards.
  • Polyethylene film. Is the most available, economic and simple option of vapor barrier. Besides, it can be applied also to waterproofing of cold roof.
  • Three-layer polyethylene membrane. This material due to availability of armoring lattice has good rupture strength, than above-mentioned single-layer film from polyethylene. It allows to use this option even for waterproofing of cold roof.
  • Polypropylene film. This woven polypropylene cloth, on the one hand it is laminated. If to speak about durability and resistance to various mechanical influences, it is the best paroizolyatsionny protection in the market of modern construction materials.
  • The foiled film. The aluminum, or metallized foil has on the one hand the reflecting layer which provides additional warming as reflection of heat gets in the room. As a rule, this option of vapor barrier is reasonable for baths, but perfectly is suitable also for protection of normal housing.
  • This material is laminated by means of polyethylene film. Such paroizolyator shows high efficiency at its use in cyclically warmed buildings.
  • Bitumen and other bitumsoderzhashchy materials. They perform not only function of paroizolyator, but also are used for pasting of roof. Nevertheless, bitumen has shortcoming: at impact on material of low temperatures it becomes brittle and collapses.

Technology of use of material for vapor barrier

Stage No. 1. General surface preparation

First of all, the basis for future parobaryer – surface is prepared. It should be cleaned from pollution and to dry up carefully. Compulsory procedure – priming of the basis. If it is about metal surface, it needs to be degreased in addition. It is necessary to know that for due protection of heater against steam and moisture paroizolyatsionny material has to be put on room inside in "pie" between layer of thermal insulation and internal covering.

Stage No. 2. Mounting of sealing strip

Competent and right laying of paroizolyatsionny film is its maximum tightness. That is why at first for moisture penetration exception in roof structure through film fixing points on framework it is necessary to mount self-adhesive sealing strip. For this purpose it is necessary to tear off hands protective film, to attach the film to surface of framework and to slightly press down it. It is necessary to pay attention that for economy of tape it should be pasted lobes on brackets after mounting of film the stapler. However in this case the vapor barrier device becomes complicated a little as there is no possibility of its preliminary fixing.

Stage No. 3. Mounting of paroizolyatsionny film

At this stage it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme of actions strictly. First, it is necessary to roll roll with film and to paste it to racks. Secondly, the film should be recorded in addition the stapler. For this purpose it is necessary to hammer brackets with step about 20 cm. Thirdly, laying of paroizolyatsionny film it is necessary to make with an overlap about 20 cm thick. For this purpose it is necessary to have the second cloth parallel to the first taking into account this requirement. At last, fourthly, joints of paroizolyatsionny film need to be glued well. The sealing strip or construction (bilateral) adhesive tape is for this purpose used.

Stage No. 4. Mounting of furring

To framework over film wooden rails of 20х30 in size are beaten. Further to them finishing material fastens. On it arrangement of paroizolyatsionny contour comes to the end. It is in addition necessary to insert heater into space between racks, and outside likewise to mount vlago- and wind-shelter film.
