1. In general the viscosity of engine oil is as far as it is capable to keep the fluid properties, remaining on internal details of the engine. Each type of the motor imposes the requirements to viscosity of oil therefore the Association of the American automobile engineers developed the special classification describing viscosity under the influence of various temperatures. Operation of the engine will be safe in this temperature range if to apply suitable oil.
2. Look at packing of engine oil. But the label after a trigram abbreviation of SAE you can see several numbers which are divided by letter W and a dash. This designation speaks about at what temperature this oil will keep properties, necessary for normal operation of the engine. For example, if you see 5W-30, the first figure says that the minimum temperature of oil is not lower than-35 degrees (to learn this value, take away from this figure 40). The second designates high-temperature viscosity, that is the more this number, the viscosity of oil will increase at temperature increase stronger. The optimum level of viscosity depends on engine type.
3. It is considered that the high-temperature viscosity, the better is higher. As a rule, oils with a high rate of viscosity at a big temperature use in sports cars for work at high speeds. However it is necessary to remember that it is necessary to select oil type in strict accordance with type of your engine, and "sports" oil will not force the car to go quicker.
4. The viscosity of oil also goes down at too long use. To check whether it is time to change it, pound slightly oils between fingers. If you feel that firm grains appeared, so the quality of oil decreased. It is also possible to define whether cooling liquid got to oil, filling it in a glass and having let stand during the night. If the liquid layer was at the bottom formed, so oil demands replacement.
