How to find distance between two parallel straight lines

Determination of distance between two objects which are in one or several planes is one of the most widespread tasks in geometry. Being guided by the standard methods, you can find distance between two parallel straight lines.

Instruction

1. The straight lines lying in one plane which either are not crossed are called parallel, or coincide. For finding of distance between parallel straight lines it is necessary to choose any point on one of them then to lower a perpendicular to the second straight line. Now it is necessary only to measure length of the turned-out piece. Length of the perpendicular connecting two parallel straight lines will also be distance between them.

2. Pay attention much carrying out a perpendicular from one parallel straight line to another as the accuracy of the calculated distance depends on it. For this purpose use the drawing tool "triangle" with a right angle. Choose a point on one of straight lines, apply to it one of the parties of a triangle adjoining a right angle (leg), and combine the second party with other straight line. Sharply ground pencil draw along the first leg a line so that it reached an opposite straight line.

3. Use compasses for measurement of length of the received perpendicular. Establish compasses legs in points in which the perpendicular crosses straight lines. After that move legs on a measuring ruler, consider the turned-out distance and bring it in a notebook.

4. In the absence of compasses just try to combine zero division of a ruler with the initial point of a perpendicular and arrange along it a ruler. Length of a perpendicular will be the division which is located near the second point of intersection, and, therefore, it also will be distance between two parallel straight lines.
