Today there are several main forms of record of rational numbers. Generally they are presented in the form various (decimal, ordinary correct, wrong and mixed) fractions. To find the whole part of a rational number, it is convenient to use the method depending on a record form.
Instruction
1. Master the basic rule which is required when finding the whole parts of numbers. It follows from the definition of the whole part indicating that it cannot be more initial number. In other words, absolute values of the whole parts of positive numbers have to remain, and negative - to decrease by unit after their allocation.
2. Find the whole part of the rational number which is written down in the form of a final or recurring decimal decimal. For this purpose at first reject a fractional part which is located after the sign of a decimal divider (in the majority of the countries it is a comma, in some English-speaking countries - a point). Then use the rule of finding of the whole parts described in the previous step. So, the whole part of positive number 34.567 will be 34. For a negative-23.45 whole part it will be equal to-24.
3. The operations procedure when finding the whole part of the rational number presented in the form of the mixed fraction (having the part consisting of an integer and a proper fraction) is similar that it was described in the previous point for decimal fractions. At first also reject a fractional part, and then apply the rule from the first step. So, the whole part of number 3¼ will be equal 3, and numbers-3¾ –-4.
4. At common proper fractions the module of numerator is less than denominator module. Therefore, presenting them in the form of an improper fraction and applying the approach described in the previous step it is possible to come to a conclusion that it is worth applying the simple rule to finding of their whole part. If the proper fraction is positive, then the whole part is equal to zero. If it is negative, then-1.
5. For finding of the whole part of not mixed improper fractions at first give them to or decimal. For this purpose just divide numerator into a denominator. Then perform the operations described in the second step.
