How to measure cylinder volume

How to measure cylinder volume

Understand a solid which bases are circles as a cylinder, and the corner between a side surface and the basis makes 90 degrees. For calculation of volume of a cylinder there are special formulas and methods. Use of any given way of measurement is defined by those tools which you have.

It is required to you

  • - measuring tools;
  • - calculator.

Instruction

1. Use a formula for calculation of volume of a cylinder: V = H x S, where V – cylinder volume; H – its height; S – area of one of the bases; x – the sign of multiplication. Such formula can be applied only when the area of the basis is known from statements of the problem and does not demand preliminary calculations. For example, if height of a cylinder is 2 m, and the area of one of its bases equals 3.5 sq.m, then V = 2 x 3.5 = 7 CBM.

2. If the area of the basis is unknown from conditions, previously make calculations. For this purpose square the known or measured radius of the circle lying in the basis and increase it by number "пи", equal about 3.14. For an example if radius is equal to 1.2 m, then the area of the basis will be: S = 1.2 x 1.2 x 3.14 = 4.52 sq.m. Now increase the found size by cylinder height to receive its volume.

3. With the known diameter of the basis of a cylinder and its height calculate solid volume on a formula: V = 3.14 x H x D²/4, where V – cylinder volume; 3.14 - number "пи"; H – cylinder height; D – diameter; x – the sign of multiplication; / – division sign. So if diameter of the circle lying in the basis is 0.5 m, height of a cylinder is equal to 1.2 m, then volume will be: 3.14 x 1.2 x 0.5 x 0.5/4 = 0.236 CBM.

4. With the known length of a circle of the basis and height find the cylinder volume as the work of height of a cylinder on private from division of a square of length of a circle on the following formula: V = L² x H / (3.14 x 4), where V – cylinder volume; 3.14 - number "пи"; H – cylinder height; L – length of the circle lying in the cylinder basis.

5. If you need to measure the volume of a real cylinder, before carrying out calculations on one of the formulas given above make measurement of an object by means of measuring tools. For measurement of linear parameters of a solid use a ruler, a caliper, a measuring cord or a roulette.

6. Apply the principle of copying if it is not possible to measure cylinder parameters on the place. For this purpose photograph a cylinder, including its basis and height, having placed a ruler or a subject with the known sizes, for example, a matchbox nearby. Then take measurement of the sizes according to the photo, having transferred data to the corresponding scale.
