The question mark – an important element of a written language in many languages which costs along with the exclamation mark and a point. It possesses a number of functions which allow to understand and acquire the written material better.
Instruction
1. The first function of the question mark – dividing. It is a punctuation symbol which finishes the offer. For example, "you went to shop? For a long time it was time to return". In this case the question mark shows that the question came to the end, and new will bear absolutely other emotional color.
2. The second function – intonational. The question mark which is located at the end of the offer says to the reader that it is necessary to change intonation with interrogative. For example, a phrase "I will go for a walk" will sound in the affirmative, action will be perfect. If to add at the end the question mark, then it will turn out "I will go for a walk?", read and said with interrogative intonation.
3. The third function – semantic. The question mark helps the reader or the listener to define the statement purpose. For example, the question "Who Will Be Able to Guess This Riddle?" implies search of the subject which will manage to give the correct object, and nothing any more.
4. The question mark is put at the end of simple expression with a direct question: do you love oranges, the friend? Also question mark can be put in offers after each homogeneous part to carry out the partition of a question. For example, "that I am a hero? villain? derelict? winner?". In addition, the question mark is put at the end of a nominative question: we burn?
5. The question mark at the end of a compound sentence is put in case all its components or only the last are interrogative. For example, "You really laughed over his jokes, and he smiled to you in reply?". Also question mark is put with complex sentences if the question is present at least at one offer (not important, in the main thing or a subordinate clause). For example, "You know that I love you?".
6. The question mark needs to be put in a complex sentence if the indirect question has strongly expressed intonation. For example, "I asked how it came to it?". Also question mark should be put in an asyndetic complex sentence if all or at least its last part have interrogative intonation. For example, "gold primanchivo – as to me to resist it?".
7. The question mark expresses a mute question in dialogue: - Do you though represent who it?-???
8. To express doubts or bewilderment writing, the question mark is bracketed and put directly after a keyword. For example, "It was really beautiful (?) and rich". Also bewilderment can be expressed by means of a combination of the question and exclamation mark, put at the end of the offer. For example, "You in general who such!?".
