What in literature is called the culmination

One of the most important elements of composition of any literary work is the culmination. The culmination, as a rule, is located before the outcome in the work.

The term "culmination" in literary criticism

There is this term from the Latin word ""culminatio"" which matters the highest point of tension of any forces in the work. Most often the word ""culminatio"" is translated as "top", "peak", "point". In the literary work the emotional peak most often is meant.

In literary criticism by the word "culmination" it is accepted to designate the moment of the most high voltage in development of action in the work. It is the moment when there is an important collision (even solving) between characters in the most difficult circumstances. After this collision the work plot promptly moves to an outcome.

It is important to understand that through characters the author usually pushes together the ideas which carriers are characters of works. Each of them is published in the work not accidentally namely with the purpose to move the idea and to resist to the idea the main (she can often coincide with the author's idea).

The difficult culmination in the work

Depending on complexity of the work, the number of characters, the put ideas, the created conflicts, the culmination of the work can become complicated. Several culmination points occur in some volume novels. As a rule, it concerns epic novels (those which describe life of several generations). Striking examples of such works are novels "War and peace" by L.N. Tolstoy, "Quiet Don" by Sholokhov. Not only the epic novel, but also less volume works can have the difficult culmination. The ideological fullness, a large number of story lines and characters can explain their composite complexity. Anyway the culmination always plays a significant role in perception by the reader of the text. The culmination is capable to change cardinally ratios in the text and the reader's attitude towards heroes and development of history.

The culmination – an integral part of composition of any history

The culmination, as a rule, follows one or several complications of the text. The outcome can follow the culmination or the final can coincide with the culmination. Such final is often called "open". In the culmination the key part of the problem of all work reveals. This rule works for all types of the art text, beginning from fairy tales, fables and finishing with large literary works.
