The second swimming of Christopher Columbus was the most long of all his swimmings. During this expedition the majority of islands of the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica, Puerto Rico were open and also the first city of San Domingo is founded.

During the second travel Columbus opened and surveyed the majority of islands of the Caribbean Sea. This time the seafarer could equip already seventeen ships and the expedition totaled more than one thousand people. Missionaries for a baptism of savages, officials, court and military for the organization of colonies were its part.
As a result the Small Antilles and Virgin Islands, and also Puerto Rico and Jamaica were discovered by an expedition. The first land which was met by an expedition there was an island from the Small Antilles ridge which Columbus called by the name of day of the week when that was open - Dominica (Latin of Dominicus - revival). The following open island - Guadeloupe. After the expedition in detail explored all twenty Lesser Antilles, then the turn and Virginia came.
Such name was given because of futility of islands. Originally Columbus called them "Islands of Eleven thousand maidens" in honor of the martyr Ursula and eleven thousand British maidens tortured by Attila.
After inspection of the Virgin Islands Columbus found the big island which the seafarer called San Juan-Bautista in honor of Saint John the Baptist. However the name did not take root, and we know it as Puerto Rico today that in translation means "rich port".
Discovery of Jamaica and research of Cuba
Then the second expedition met resistance of natives of Caribs who had to be pacified in arms, and was weakened by epidemic of yellow fever. Having recovered from diseases and fight against Caribs, Columbus moved the West and opened the big island which he called Santiago in honor of Saint Jacob. Today it is known as Jamaica. Then the seafarer brought the ships to the southern coast of Cuba to the narrow and deep bay under the name of Guantanamo, notorious because of the American prison which is located there where few years ago the prisoners kidnapped from around the world contained.
Columbus still stayed in ignorance of the territories which are rather opened for them: he considered that it either the West bank of India, or Japan which according to many researchers and was its purpose. In this delusion he also died.
Further the expedition was covered by a succession of disasters: the group of Spaniards stole the ships and ran away to Spain, the others began to plunder and rape natives, war began. Here Columbus proved to be already as the ruthless colonist and started Espanyela's (Haiti) suppression. Here it founded the first city of the New World – San Dominica, the become capital of Espanyely, and later and Dominican Republic. Soon after that Columbus returned to Spain.
