On August 15, 2012 in National medical and surgical center of N.I. Pirogov for the first time in the world the operation with a blood circulation stop was performed. The team of heart surgeons headed by the academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Science Yury Shevchenko saved life to the 24-year-old patient who is in critical condition.
After heavy road accident of young person got in resuscitation from where it was transferred to neurosurgical office subsequently. Massive infusional therapy contributed to the development in it of a septic (infectious) endocarditis with defeat of the right cameras of heart. Urgent heart surgery was required for the patient, but because of an injury of the head and heavy injury of lungs use of artificial blood circulation was impossible. Hardware support of haemo dynamics, most likely, would cause irreversible complications. Yury Shevchenko made the unique decision – to perform open-heart surgery with a temporary stop of blood circulation and cooling of a brain.
Operation was performed for record-breaking short term – blood circulation was stopped only for 3 minutes 50 seconds. During this time surgeons managed to remove the huge, more than 3 cm in size, infected abscess (vegetation) which was located at one and shutters of the three-leaved valve. Full sanitation of the right cameras of heart was carried out, the plasticity of the three-leaved valve is carried out.
In an hour the patient recovered and was disconnected from the medical ventilator. Warm activity returned to normal and did not need additional stimulation. He passed a complex of rehabilitation actions in the Center, independently goes, communicates. The condition of the patient does not cause any concerns, and operation was considered successful. The performed operation – the first-ever surgery which is successfully carried out at a septic endocarditis in the conditions of a stop of blood circulation and a hypothermia of a brain. Experience of the academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Science Yury Shevchenko and neurosurgeons of NMHC helped to save the patient in almost hopeless situation when application of traditional methods was impossible.
