1. Check work of a compass. Take a steel subject (usual keys, a small knife, scissors, etc. well will approach). Put a compass on a horizontal surface if the arrow has a fastening, release it. The arrow will orient in some direction. Take a subject, and, having established it opposite to the northern end of an arrow, begin to conduct it along the case of a compass in any I will shift. The arrow has to orient regarding and move, indicating it. After passing of a quarter of a turn, remove a metal subject. The arrow has to orient again in that situation with which began the movement.
2. Before measurements make sure that in close proximity to a compass there are no bodies of iron (steel, cast iron), permanent magnets, conductors with current. Determine the price of division of a scale of a compass. For this purpose take on it two next numerical values, subtract from bigger smaller. Divide result into number of divisions between these numerical values.
3. Put a compass on a horizontal surface and release to his shooter if fastening is provided. Wait until the arrow equilibrates and will orient on the North (as a rule, it is the blue end of an arrow, red is guided by the South). Correctly establish a compass scale. For this purpose turn it until the point corresponding 0º does not coincide with the northern end of an arrow. Orient in the necessary direction.
4. To make it most precisely put a direct and thin subject in the set direction, it can be an equal branch, a match, a ruler, etc. At the same time the subject should not be made of any alloy of iron at all, otherwise the arrow will get off at once. By means of a scale on a compass calculate a corner between an arrow of a compass and the direction on the necessary subject. This corner will also be an azimuth. Knowing an azimuth from a certain point it is possible to be guided easily by areas, without being afraid to get lost.
