How to calculate average speed

It is very simple to calculate average speed. It is enough to divide length of the way passed by a body into the spent time. However in practice and also at the solution of physical tasks it is necessary to consider some nuances of the movement.

It is required to you

Instruction

1. It is the simplest to calculate the average speed of uniform motion of a body on some site of a way. As speed on all piece of the movement does not change, it also will equal average speed. In the form of a formula it can be written down as follows: Vcp = Vrd where Vcp is average speed, and Vrd is the speed of uniform motion on some site.

2. For calculation of average speed of the uniformly accelerated (ravnozamedlenny) movement on some site put final and initial speed. Then divide result into two. The received private will also be average speed. More visually it looks in the form of a formula: Vcp = (VK + Vn) / 2 where Vcp is average speed, VK is final speed, Vn is initial speed.

3. If final speed is unknown, but the initial speed and size of acceleration is set, then use the following option of the above-stated formula: As at the uniformly accelerated movement VK = Vn + a * t, where and – acceleration: Vcp = (VK + Vn) / 2 = (Vn + a * t + Vn) / 2 = Vn + a * t/2

4. If the final speed and acceleration is known, but initial speed is not set, then transform the above-stated formula to the following look: Vcp = (VK + Vn) / 2 = (VK + VK - a * t) / 2 = VK - a * t/2

5. If length of the way passed by a body and time spent for passing of this way is known, then for calculation of average speed divide the passable way for a while. That is use a formula: Vcp = S/t where S is length of the passable way. At the same time consider that time needs to be considered completely irrespective of, an object in the course of passing of the site stopped or not.

6. If it is not specified especially, then average speed is meant as average traveling speed. At its calculation the passable way is understood as length of a trajectory of the movement of a body. If the body in the course of the movement returned to the passable points, then such sites are also considered (increase) to the total length of a way.

7. If it is necessary to find the average speed of movement, as parameter S take that distance on which an object was displaced during t. As movement happens in a certain direction, size S in this case vector, i.e. except absolute value, is characterized also by the direction. Respectively and the value of average speed of movement will be vector size. Therefore before the solution of a task surely specify what speed is required to be calculated: average traveling speed, average speed of movement or just absolute value of average speed of movement. By the way, if an object in the course of the movement returns to a starting point, then its average speed of movement will be equal to zero.
