How to carry out the analysis of the poem

At lessons of literature or at the Olympic Games the pupils often should carry out the analysis of poems. You will be able to perform this work qualitatively and with little effort if you get acquainted with the plan (sequence and the main components) of the analysis of lyrical works.

1. Begin to make the analysis of the poem from the message of the most important data on works of the poet. First of all, specify date of writing of the lyrical work and correlate to stages of life and works of the poet. For example, during the period which it is accepted to call Boldino autumn, many works were written by A.S. Pushkin. If you get acquainted with a life story of the poet, then will understand the reason of such creative rise: at this time A.S. Pushkin prepared for marriage with N.N. Goncharova and was happy.

2. Specify to what literary direction this lyrical work belongs: to classicism, romanticism, realism, modernism, etc. Try to comment on the choice of the poet. For example, in early works of M.Yu. Lermontov, in the thirties the nineteenth century, the romanticism prevails. In these works you will be able to feel deep loneliness of the lyrical hero, his protest against reality, societies, etc.

3. Open the creative history of the poem. If it was begun during one creative period of the poet, and this important remark in the analysis of the work is finished considerably later, then. Besides, it is worth specifying data on what was an incitement for writing of the poem. For example, N.A. Nekrasov wrote the poem ""Reflections at a Main Entrance"" when he saw from a window as cruelly treated applicants peasants at a porch of the important grandee. In several hours he wrote the poem though before was in creative crisis and could not write lines.

4. Specify a poem subject: love lyrics, reflections about high aspiration of a poet and poetry, the description of the nature, love for the country, etc. Try to analyze by means of what art means of expression, stylistic figures, etc. the poet opens this subject.

5. If the poet uses metaphors, epithets, an oxymoron, etc. art means of expression, specify them. Also note an embodiment if it is available.

6. Describe mood which imbued this poem: light grief, pacification, melancholy and loneliness, joy and delight, etc. Characterize (whenever possible) an image of the lyrical hero. Report about the attitude towards him.

7. If the mood or rate of the poem changes from the first stanzas to the last, specify it in the analysis. For example, in the poem by A.S. Pushkin ""Prisoner"" the first lines are imbued with gloomy mood, and in the conclusion when the poet writes about free life, speed in the poem is accelerated, and hopelessness and melancholy are replaced with expectation of a miracle, joy, happiness.

8. Define a meter which wrote the poem: iamb, trochee, dactyl, amphibrach, anapaest, etc.

9. Specify rhyming which was applied by the author: pair, cross, covering.

10. Report about what impression at you developed from the read poem and also about what conclusions about works of the poet, about his personality you could make. If you had a desire to get acquainted with works by this author in more detail after the analysis which is carried out by you, surely note it.
