Instruction
1. Many salts of alkaline and alkaline-earth metals have property of coloring of a flame. Quite often I use them in production of rockets and fireworks. Usually use nitrates, is more rare – carbonates. Other salts will also give unusual color of a flame.
2. If you want to change color of fire of a spirit-lamp, open it and add boric acid to alcohol, and then set fire to a match. As a result of reaction with alcohol substance trietilborat which burns with a bright green flame is formed. For acceleration of reaction you can drip in a spirit-lamp sulfuric acid which will act as the catalyst of chemical process.
3. It is convenient to change color of a flame on the gas burner. Set fire to nitrate or a carbonate of potassium, and you will see how the flame gets violet coloring.
4. Ions of lithium are capable to paint fire in red color. Put lithium salt on a spoon and take it over the gas burner, and you will see how the flame will change.
5. Calcium gives to a flame brick-red coloring. Bring the mineral containing calcium in fire, and you will be able to observe this beautiful phenomenon.
6. Beautifully also selenium salts burn. If you set fire to this element, the flame will be painted in cornflower-blue color. And molybdenum gives flavovirent coloring of fire.
7. From influence of salts of copper the coloring of a flame can vary. So, if you set fire to copper nitrate, coloring will be green, chloride – blue. When mixing two salts fire will burn in blue-green color.
8. Shaving of magnesium will give you crimson coloring of a flame. The only lack of this experience is that shaving very quickly burns down.
9. Set fire to salts of barium or strontium, and you will be able to observe a flame is dazzling white color.
