Most often unstressed vowels in a word root raise questions. For such cases certain rules are provided. Exceptions in them are also enough, they should be remembered only.

1. There is the general rule for all unstressed vowels which spelling raises doubts. It is necessary to find a word in which a similar part will be under an accent. I.e. the first "about" in the word "collect" can be checked the word "collected". "I" in the word "grassy" - the word "oat" (they have identical suffixes "-yan"). Unstressed vowels in the terminations can be checked the same way. For example, "about a cat" - "about war" (these words belong to a feminine gender, the first inducement therefore rules of change of the terminations in them I will are identical).
2. More often problems cause unstressed vowels in word roots. They are checked in the same way, as well as in Paragraph 1 ("sea" - "sea"). It is worth remembering interchangeable vowels "and - I", "about-e", "at-yu". When checking they can replace each other. A headache of many school students - roots with the alternating vowels (ber-bir, measures worlds, pilaf-plav, a zar-zor, ravn-rovn, etc.). Part of them submits to such rule: without accent the letter "about", under an accent is always written - "about" and "and" (roots of mountains-gar, a clone clan, tvor-tvar). In other roots, on the contrary, unaccented always "and" (zor-zar, plav-pilaf). A part of roots has the specific rules of writing. For example, in the roots "log-log-beds" before "" unaccented is "about", before - "and" (to state - to state). "Dews (t)-races (t)-ращ" - before "with" - "about", before "St" and "щ" - "and" (to grow up, grown up, but grown). These rules need to be remembered, check of vowels will not help here.
3. There are very many words in which the spelling of an unaccented vowel can be checked, alas, only according to the dictionary. Generally it the words which came to us from other languages. For example, "misanthrope", "candelabrum", "визаж", "ophthalmologist", etc. They need also to be remembered only. But there are also more "native" words in which, nevertheless, the spelling of vowels cannot be checked too. Here some of them: "dog", "loaf", "fritters", "January", "fire", etc.
