How to define a verse rhyme

The word "rhyme" came from the Greek rhythmos which is translated as "harmony". A concept of a rhyme — one of fundamental in the theory of versification. It designates repetition of sounds which connect the terminations of two and more lines.

Instruction

1. A rhyme call accord of the terminations of verses. Its role in strengthening of the rhythmic organization of poetry is huge. Uniform repetition of the rhythmic units relying on internal harmony forms a rhythmic basis to the poetic speech. In sillabo-tonic versification the rhyme is at the same time the amplifier of a rhythm and a graphic means of expression of poetic diction. Therefore for the analysis of the poem it is very important to be able to define in it rhymes.

2. In poetry distinguish three main types of rhymes: men's, women's and dactylic. The rhyme with an accent on a final syllable in the line "amuse-to correct" is called men's. In a female rhyme the accent is the share of a penultimate syllable in line "rules – forced", and a dactylic rhyme – on a syllable, the third from the end of a line, "wanderers – exiles". So that to define a type of a rhyme, it is necessary to place an accent in lines and to look at what syllable from the end it falls.

3. More polysyllabic rhymes are called hyper dactylic. They meet seldom. The rhyme in the poem by Bryusov "opal can be an example – pinning".

4. Depending on that, vowels and consonants at the end of the lines are how in consonance, rhymes are divided into exact and inexact. In exact rhymes the vowels and concordants entering the terminations in consonance coincide "pearl – southern". The rhyme based on coincidence of one, sometimes two sounds "beautiful – unextinguishable is inexact". Defining rhyme type, compare the terminations of lines in consonance and define how many in them coinciding sounds. If one-two or there is no coincidence at all, then before you an inexact rhyme. If in the terminations more than two coinciding vowels and concordants, then are an exact rhyme.

5. Besides types of rhymes it is necessary to distinguish ways of rhyming. They are very diverse, but three are the most widespread: adjacent, cross and ring.

6. Adjacent (steam room) is called rhyming of the next lines: the first with the second, third with the fourth (according to the scheme "aabb"). In cross rhyming in consonance are the first – the third, second – the fourth lines (according to the scheme "abab"). At ring the first and fourth, second and third lines (scheme "ABBA") are rhymed. For clarification of a way of rhyming read a quatrain, define lines in consonance and write the scheme according to which the way of rhyming will be visually visible.
