How to define the main word

Phrases and offers are studied by syntax. The phrase comprises the main and dependent word. Between the main and dependent word the subordinative connection is established.

Instruction

1. The main word is from what the question to dependent is set. For example, "to read the book": to read – that? – book; "to walk in the yard": to walk – where? – in the yard; "it is very beautiful": beautifully – as far as? – very much. From ways of subordinative communication in phrases allocate coordination, management and an adjunction.

2. If type of subordinative communication is coordination, the form of a dependent word will be coordinated with a main thing form. The sort, number and a case enters a concept of a form: lovely scenery, lovely sceneries, lovely scenery. When the case of the main word changes, for example, the case and a dependent word in precisely the same way changes. In such phrases a dependent word usually is the adjective, and the main thing - a noun.

3. Management – a way of communication at which the main word operates dependent by means of a certain case question. Examples: "to build the house" (an accusative case), "having seen a fox" (a genitive case), "noise of the sea" (genitive case), "remembered a debt" (an instrumental case). A dependent word – a noun or a noun with a pretext.

4. One more way of communication of words in phrases – an adjunction. Here only semantic (lexical) and intonational communication is observed, and grammatical this communication is not expressed in any way. The dependent word is unchangeable, it can be an adverb or an adverbial participle. For example: "long was silent", "cheerfully talked", "ran skipping", "welcomed smiling".

5. So, to define the main word, ask a question to a phrase. Do not confuse a phrase with a grammatical basis: in it both a word will be main, equal, and to another to ask a question from one word it will not turn out.

6. In the offer "Under noise of an applause there was a circus actor" it is possible to allocate a grammatical basis: "there was a circus actor". What phrases are in this offer? "Left under noise" (the main word – left, a question – under what?); "under noise of an applause" (the main word – under noise, a question – what?). In both phrases type of communication of words – management.
