How to determine an azimuth by a compass

For the correct orientation to areas and receiving the necessary direction of the movement it is necessary to define a magnetic azimuth by a compass. A magnetic azimuth – the corner located horizontally measured clockwise from the magnetic meridian (directed to the North magnetic Pole) to the direction on an object. The size of a magnetic azimuth can be from 0 to 360 degrees. There is a direct and return magnetic azimuth, is used respectively for the movement to the chosen object or from it in the opposite direction.

Instruction

1. For receiving a magnetic azimuth you hold a compass horizontally in the left hand. The right hand remove the brake holding an arrow of a compass. Rotating the case of a compass, achieve coincidence northern (it is marked in the blue color) the end of an arrow with a zero mark of a scale. Then rotate a ring with a viewfinder before coincidence of the line of a look to remote and well visible subject, the building or a tree. Make counting of an azimuth on this subject. Do counting from zero value of a scale clockwise to figure on the scale located opposite to the index of a viewfinder.

2. Do the correct combination of the line of a viewfinder with the line of the direction on the chosen object, several times transferring a view from the line of a viewfinder of an object and back. Do not lift a compass to eyes, it is so easy to worsen the accuracy of definition of an azimuth. Apply special compasses, for example Andrianov's systems, to obtaining bigger accuracy of a magnetic azimuth.

3. If it is necessary to move from the chosen object in the opposite direction, define the return magnetic azimuth. For this purpose add 180 degrees to a direct azimuth if its digital value is less than 180 degrees or take away 180 degrees if its digital value is more than 180 degrees.

4. For the correct definition of the direction on earlier received magnetic azimuth, rotating a viewfinder ring, combine its index with figure on the scale equal to the value of a magnetic azimuth defined earlier. Then remove a brake of an arrow of a compass and rotating the case of a compass, achieve coincidence of the northern region of an arrow to a zero mark of a scale. The line of a viewfinder will define the necessary direction. For the further movement note well noticeable separate reference point in the area of a viewfinder.
