How to distinguish brass from bronze

How to distinguish brass from bronze

To distinguish bronze from brass and, moreover, it is possible to define exact composition of alloy only in special laboratory (for example, methods of the spectroscopic analysis). Unfortunately, in house conditions (especially when it is impossible to put scratches or somehow still to damage a subject) the range of opportunities will be very limited. Nevertheless, there is an algorithm which gives let and approximate, but after all results.

It is required to you

  • Exact scales and the transparent graduated vessel with water; calculator; a strong magnifying glass or a microscope, samples of bronze and brass with chips.

Instruction

1. Begin with the visual analysis. It is necessary to clean carefully a subject and to place on sunlight. As a rule, bronze is more dark than brass, and if to estimate color, then bronze goes to a "red" range (that is from reddish to brown), and brass in "yellow", up to white. However this method is extremely inexact therefore you pass to the following step.

2. Carry out the analysis of alloy on density. Exact scales and the transparent graduated vessel with water will be necessary. In water its volume, – weight is defined by weighing lowering of a subject. Density is the body weight relation to its volume, we transfer to the SI format (kg/CBM). As a rule, is more dense than bronze latuny, and the line of division lies on value of 8700 kg/CBM 8400 - 8700 kg/CBM – almost for certain brass. 8750 – 8900 – almost for certain bronze.

3. And at last, structures of alloy. It is necessary to notice that here samples – objects which structure can be identified unambiguously as bronze and brass are necessary; at the same time samples have to have chips. Actually analysis requires strong (better binocular) a magnifying glass or a microscope (even children's). The analysis is made by the room under review at the same time of a sample (chip) and subject of the analysis. What do we pay attention to? On structure of alloy – as speak, its "grain". As a rule, bronze has larger and rough "grain", than brass.
