How to draw the correct ellipse

Ellipse — a geometrical figure. On appearance it is similar to an oval, but it  is not. For its construction on paper several techniques well familiar to that who took a course of engineering graphics are used. For creation of the correct ellipse it is necessary to foreknow its parameters — the size of its big and small axis.

Instruction

1. From the center of future ellipse carry out two auxiliary circles. Diameter of one of them has to be equal to a big axis of a figure, diameter another – a small axis. For convenience of further constructions divide circles into four equal parts. It can be done, having drawn two perpendicular straight lines which are crossed in the center of future image. Start creation of a curve anew in one of quarters.

2. From the center of circles draw several lines which would cross both circles. What you will use the bigger number of lines, than more precisely and more correctly the ellipse will turn out. By rules of engineering graphics for the different sizes of axes there is a recommended, most optimum quantity of beams of construction.

3. Find additional points of an ellipse. For this purpose consistently carry out the following algorithm of actions in relation to each drawn beam. From a beam point of intersection with a small circle carry out a horizontal direct beam towards a big circle. From a point of intersection of an initial beam with a big circle draw a line in the direction of a small circle.

4. Points of intersection of the last drawn beams will also be additional points. Do not forget that auxiliary circles limit an ellipse curve on its length and width. Therefore, on this curve there will be two points, the general from each of auxiliary circles. Also use these points for constructions.

5. On the received points draw a smooth curve which will be the line of an ellipse in the quarter of the drawing chosen by you. Pay attention that in a curve common ground with auxiliary circles it has to be strictly horizontal or strictly vertical.

6. Using this algorithm, execute creation of an ellipse in three other quarters of the drawing. For this purpose you can carry out the same constructions to fulfill the acquired skills. And you can just reflect the found additional points through axes of auxiliary circles.
