How to extract hydrogen in house conditions

Hydrogen – the first element of the table of Mendeleyev, the substance which is most spread on Earth. It is everywhere used in the food, aviation and chemical industry. It is colourless light gas. In house conditions it is possible to receive hydrogen, using reactions of aluminum and zinc with water solution of alkalis, reactions of metals with solutions of acids and at reaction of electrolysis in solution of salts, alkalis and acids.

It is required to you

  • plastic bottle with a capacity of 1.5 liters, rubber ball, pan with water, potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide (caustic soda, caustic rubbed), 40 centimeters of a wire from aluminum, a zinc piece, glass capacity with a narrow neck, solution of hydrochloric acid, a rubber ball, the accumulator of 12 Volts, a wire from copper, a wire from zinc, a glass vessel, water, table salt, glue, the syringe.

Instruction

1. Fill half with water a plastic bottle. Throw in a bottle and dissolve in water 10-15 grams of a caustic natr or caustic soda. Put a bottle in a pan with water. Cut an aluminum wire pieces 5 centimeters long and throw in a bottle. Put on a rubber ball a bottle mouth. The hydrogen emitted during reaction of aluminum with alkali solution will gather in a rubber ball. This reaction happens to rough allocation of heat - be careful!

2. Pour in the glass capacity of hydrochloric acid and throw at her zinc. Put on a balloon a mouth of glass capacity. The hydrogen emitted during reaction of zinc with hydrochloric acid will gather in the balloon.

3. Pour water in glass capacity and stir in it 4–5 tablespoons of table salt. Then push in the syringe from the piston a copper wire. Pressurize this place glue. Lower the syringe in a vessel with hydrochloric solution and removing the piston, fill the syringe. Connect a copper wire to a negative conclusion of the accumulator. Lower near the syringe in salt solution a zinc wire and connect it to a positive conclusion of the accumulator. As a result of reaction of electrolysis about a copper wire hydrogen which forces out hydrochloric solution from the syringe is emitted, the contact of a copper wire with hydrochloric solution will be interrupted, and reaction will stop.
