How to find length if the area and width is known

At the solution of geometrical tasks some parameters usually pay off if others are known. For example, if the area and width of a rectangle are set, then it is possible to find its length. Similar problems quite often should be solved also in practice – at measurements or planning of a living space, the land plots or purchase of building materials.

Instruction

1. To find length of the party of a rectangle if width and the area is known, divide numerical value of the square at numerical value of width. That is use a formula: Д = П / Highway, where: Д – length of the party of a rectangle, Highway – rectangle width, P – its area. For example, if the area of a rectangle is equal to 20 cm², and its width – 5 cm, then length of its party will be: 20 / 5 = 4 cm.

2. Before calculations transfer width and the area of a rectangle to one measuring system. That is, the area has to be expressed in the square units of measure corresponding to width. At the same time, length will turn out in the same units, as width. So, if width is set in meters, then the area needs to be transferred to square meters. Such translation at measurement of the land plots where the area is usually set in hectares, ares and "hundred parts" is especially relevant.

3. For example, let the area of the seasonal dacha equals to six hundred parts, and its width – 30 meters. It is required to find site length. As "hundred part" call 100 square meters, the area of "standard" six hundred parts can be written down as 600 m². From here length of the land plot can be found having divided 600 into 30. It turns out – 20 meters.

4. The area and width of the figure having not rectangular, but any form are sometimes set. At the same time, it is also required to find its length. As a rule, in it a case overall dimensions of a figure, that is parameters of a rectangle in which this figure can be concluded are meant. If the big accuracy of calculations is not required, then use the above-stated formula (D = P / X). However, the value of length at the same time will turn out underestimated. To receive more exact value of length of a figure, estimate, how fully the figure fills the dimensional rectangle and divide the received length into filling coefficient.

5. So, for example, if the lake has the area of 100 square kilometers, its width is equal 5 kilometers and it occupies about a half of a dimensional rectangle, then its length will be: 100 / 5 / 0.5 = 40 kilometers.
