Sometimes there is a need to determine density of any given liquid. If it is precisely known about what liquid it is – it is possible to find the necessary information in physical and chemical reference books or by means of the Internet. But what to do when solution is not familiar to you at all?
It is required to you
- - transparent measured capacity;
- - scales;
- - container with liquid which density should be measured.
Instruction
1. To measure liquid density, use any measuring device (the densimeter or the densitometer). Now different types of such devices are issued, each of which has the advantages and shortcomings.
2. Well, and how to be if there are neither devices, nor reference books, nor access to network at present? Here elementary knowledge of mathematics and physics will come to the rescue. What is density? This amount of substance in to unit volume. Proceeding from it, you also solve an objective.
3. Net and dry measured capacity, for example, the laboratory graduated glass or a cylinder (the bigger volume, the big accuracy of measurements will be provided), previously weigh on laboratory scales, write down the received result.
4. Then pour in it exactly 1 liter of the studied liquid. It should be made so: at first to pour about a liter (that level was slightly lower measured risks), then, adding small portions, to bring to exact volume. It is necessary to achieve that the bottom edge of "meniscus" of liquid had just on level risks. It will mean that volume is equal to exactly one liter (with very high precision).
5. After that weigh measured capacity again. Subtract the weight of empty capacity from the received result. The number which you defined and will be density of the studied liquid as characterizes amount of substance in 1 liter.
6. For example: the weight of empty capacity – 550, 35 grams, the weight of full capacity – 1339, 70 grams. Therefore, density of liquid equals 789.35 grams/litre or in round figures 0, 789 kg/litre. It is easily possible to make sure that this liquid on density corresponds to ethyl alcohol – ethanol.
