How to find the narration in the text

In linguistics allocate three types of the speech: narration, description, reasoning. As a rule, the text represents a combination of all three types with prevalence of one of them. The narration is characteristic of art, publicistic and colloquial style, but is not characteristic of scientific and official.

Instruction

1. If the text displays a chain of consecutive events, it is possible to claim that type of such text – "narration". Some fragment of the text, and the leading type the description or a reasoning can be the narration. Then it is about "the description with narration elements" or "a reasoning with narration elements".

2. In any narrative text there is a story line. Usually events in a plot chronologically correspond to events of real time. Therefore the narrative text can be presented in the form of the movie throughout which some actions take place mentally. The description is comparable with drawing of the imagined picture, and the reasoning seldom appeals to figurative thinking of the person.

3. On use of language means, the narration is closely connected with space and time. Characters, the place and time of commission of actions are designated. Also the result in which resulted actions of characters is quite often reported.

4. Striking example of the narrative offer: "Dunya got into the tilt cart beside the hussar, the servant jumped on a coach box, the coachman whistled and horses jumped." ("Station inspector", A.S. Pushkin). The author writes about consecutive actions, calls characters, reports a result.

5. So, distinctive feature of the narration – the story about the events, actions following one after another. Specifics, vivacity and dynamism of statement are peculiar to such story. Grammatical bases, as a rule, full: the noun calls a character, a predicate – its action. In one offer often several such grammatical bases. The sentence in this case is called compound.

6. Verbs in the narration can be in past, real and future tense. Usually the first option occurs in the story about events. Verbs in the present allow to present more brightly a situation, in the future – to tell surprise and an expression. The style of the narration is defined by a genre. It can be objective, impartial; neutral, released and subjective, emotional.
