Despite the seeming complexity of chemical terms and formulas, it is possible to receive hydroxide in house conditions. It is rather simple and quite safe. It is the simplest to receive sodium hydroxide.

- Sodium hydrocarbonate (baking soda), water. Ware for calcinating. Gas torch. Glasswares for receiving solution of alkali. Glass or steel stick, shovel or spoon.
Instruction
1. Get a sodium hydrocarbonate. In fact, it is usual baking soda. It is on sale practically in any shop.
2. Prepare ware for calcinating. Better if it is ware from fire-resistant glass or a ceramic crucible. It is possible to use steel tanks also. As a last resort, the usual tablespoon or an empty can will approach. For ware the holder excluding a burn of hands at its heating is obligatory.
3. Carry out reaction of thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbonate of sodium. Place a little hydrocarbonate of sodium in ware for calcinating. Heat ware on the gas burner. It is possible to make heating on average fire of the household gas stove - temperature will be sufficient. About passing of reaction it is possible to judge by some ""boiling"" of powder in ware because of fast release of carbon dioxide. Wait for reaction passing. In ware sodium oxide was formed.
4. Cool ware with sodium oxide to room temperature. Just rearrange ware on a fire-resistant support, or switch off the gas burner. Wait for full cooling.
5. Fill with water glass capacity. It has to be capacity with a wide mouth. It is possible to use a usual glass jar.
6. Receive sodium hydroxide in the form of water solution. At constant stirring pour sodium oxide in the small portions into water. You make stirring a glass or steel stick or a shovel.
