How to receive liquid nitrogen

How to receive liquid nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen represents the chemical compound which is usually used for fast freezing. Though this substance is more often used in scientific laboratories, it can be also used in house conditions. In the course of production of liquid nitrogen it is necessary to show care as it can be dangerous.

It is required to you

  • - empty 2 l a plastic bottle – 1 piece;
  • - empty 0.5 l a plastic bottle – 1 piece;
  • - scissors;
  • - dry ice;
  • - isopropyl alcohol;
  • - needle

Instruction

1. During creation of liquid nitrogen it is important to observe necessary precautionary measures. Put on dense jeans, a t-shirt with a long sleeve and working gloves. Besides, use goggles for eyes and avoid the probability of hit of your hair in experiment radius. It can prevent possible injuries.

2. Use a 2kh-liter plastic bottle. It has to be empty, clean and dry. You can remove the label to watch an experiment. Take sharp scissors and cut off about 7.5 - 8 cm of the top part of a bottle. You will throw out an excess part.

3. Approximately half fill the bottle prepared 2 l with dry ice. Always put on gloves during the work with dry ice as the touch to it can lead to serious injuries.

4. For receiving liquid nitrogen, it is necessary to add isopropyl alcohol to dry ice (in other words, medical alcohol). Safely to add alcohol, by means of a big needle make several openings in day and on each side 500 ml of a plastic bottle. Then place it in a 2-liter bottle and accurately place between pieces of dry ice. At the same time the most part of a smaller bottle has to be covered with dry ice. As required, it is possible to add dry ice. Make sure that openings of a small bottle are open, and dense particles do not block access.

5. Accurately pour in a small amount of alcohol in a big plastic bottle, over dry ice. Result of association of two connections will become formation of liquid nitrogen which will come to a smaller bottle through the openings created earlier and to be condensed.

6. As soon as in a smaller bottle there is enough liquid nitrogen, quickly remove it from a 2-liter bottle. Place liquid nitrogen in a reliable container and as appropriate designate it. For future use, it can be stored at the room temperature within 30 days.
